That is called "humping" and is frowned upon.
“Freedom is the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.” George Orwell, English novelist, essayist, and critic, 1903-1950

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

To be honest, I've never seen serial numbers on the stock; only on the buttplate. To answer your question, I don't swap stocks around for any purpose. I have a couple of war time rifles with late war or post-war stocks and I have a couple of pre-war rifles with war-time or post-war stocks. I can't see swapping them around to make them more "authentic." As far as I'm concerned, the stock they came with out of the refurb arsenal is the one they wear as long as I have them. :2cents:

"Humping"

Forum rules:
"Replacing damaged parts to return the firearm to working condition is acceptable and should be kept to a minimum.
Swapping out parts to make the rifle "more correct" is not acceptable nor is conversation about doing it."

It's OK to ask why, just don't pursue it further. That is called "Humping" and in some forums that are not preservation forums, it seems to be "OK". But it's not to a true collector. You would be "altering" the firearm from the way it came out of the arsenals.

Several nations DID serial the stock to the rifle:

I swapped on a pair of M39s my first year but I thought about it a while and swapped them back. Now I am not tempted at all even though I would have a better match if I swapped.

No, some have pointed out that my "48" marked M39 is wearing a early straight grip stock that would be correct on some of my earlier M39's and vastly increase their value. Yea? So? It stays on the "48" were the Finn's put it.

I swapped a stock on a T53 but only because it was cracked through the wrist. The new ones just as ugly as the old one was, just not cracked...

Just leave them as you found them. Let them tell you a story by the bumps and bruises they have.

I bought a M/N that had been sanded and refinished with poly. I was able to get a replacement stock, but if I ever sell that one I will give the buyer both stocks.
Damn, I'll bet that's going to leave a mark! Probably hurt too!

I have only swapped stocks to get bubba cut stocks off in exchange for the correct style stock. It was either that or cut the barrel down to 12-14" to match the stocks. I didn't do that because I hear the government hotels have really bad room service.

You'll be happier in the long run if you leave 'em the way you find them.
