I bought a Mosin and the last digit of the date is very faint. it's either 1940 or 1946. Any suggestions on making it clearer?

First post a pic
Second, others have had luck with white crayon. Or chalk.

1943, this was the year of the worst stampings, some so light as to be nonexistent. Pull the action out of the wood, flip it over and look at the rear part of the receiver were the screw goes, there should be a date there.

Pic would help, but it does sound like a wartime built rifle and 1943 is the most common date.

I have a rifle that all the stamping are very light and there is no date at all, even on the tang. It is likely a wartime expedient rifle.

You never can tel what the Soviets might have done, I recall one 1943 that had a full set of markings on it...twice...stamped right next to each other.

Now that would be a 1943 I wouldn't be upset with! Why didn't I get so lucky with my first half dozen? :chuckles:

Somebody wanted it bad, it went for over $200 back in the days when they sold for $60 for a '43 refurb 91/30.
