A REAL parts gun.
A REAL parts gun.
I was in need of (a.k.a. wanted!) a good .22 revolver. As I'm a restoration gunsmith, I'd accumulated a fair amount of parts for .22 hand guns. I decided that instead of buying one, I'd build one. This is the result. I call it "Buckaroo", and it's shoots sweet! I've got both .22 Mag. and .22 l.r. cylinders for it, but shoot it primarily with the mag. cylinder. The little 4" bull barrel does pretty well out to 30 yards. I have a 6" barrel, that, unfortunately is a taper press-fit (the frame is threaded), that I tried to make work, but couldn't hold it tight enough in the frame to stop barrel advancement. So, it stays with the 4" barrel. I think it came out pretty good. It's comprised of parts from F.I.E., Hawes, RG, and who knows what else. All I can say is it shoots accurately, and it is fun!

Thanks! The finish is semi-gloss engine enamel; the frame is zinc alloy, so I couldn't blue it. Wish I could. The barrel and grip frame are steel, so that part could have been, but I figured what the heck, make it all match.SA1911a1 wrote:Looks good to me. What is the finish?

Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Dang it, I have used engine enamel myself, can I now get in the gunsmith guild? I actually did use it on an old .22 rifle, with a non-ferrous receiver, and it worked just as well as Dura-bake for a heck of a lot less money.cyknight wrote:Thanks! It's funny, mentioning bake. Many people have mentioned baking engine enameled parts in the oven to harden the coating. I've done it both ways, bake or no-bake (making me think of cookies now, sounds good!), and I really don't see much difference, durability wise. Both seem reasonably tough, and it's much easier to touch-up engine enamel that it is other things! Cheaper too. As far as the gunsmith guild goes: By the power vested in me by the State of Confusion: A WHOP BAMMA LAMMA A WHOP BAM BOOM. Gotta love a do it yourself esp one that is a sixgun.
Re: A REAL parts gun.
Yep, a bunch of spare parts turned into something cool! I'd never fired a .22 Mag. before; now, because of this revolver, it's one of my favorite cartridges. Haven't had a chance to hunt with it, but hope to soon.knssrtrd wrote:Gotta love a do it yourself esp one that is a sixgun.
