Hi. I'm Gary. First rifle owned. Funny how many places I've read the posters refer to the M-G as ugly. I find it a very sexy beast compared to the 1903A3 or the M-14 I trained on in another life.

Welcome to the board Gary, the 1903-A3 and M14 are excellent weapons, by M-G do you mean Mosin Nagant? The Mosin is a little bit more of a basic infantry rifle compared to the 'A3, and not even in the same universe as the M14, but you will find it is a decent enough shooter and a fun rifle to collect. Ammo is still cheaper than either .30-06 or 7.62x51mm

Ugly? Any rifle with a wood stock is not ugly to me. Now, a plastic rifle - black or some crappy camo job - with tacticool warts on it - that's ugly.

Hello everyone!

New member from the Raleigh NC area.

Picked up 2 Mosins last week and got enough of the cosmoline off of them to handle em for pictures & such.
Looking around here for all the info I can find - initial cleaning - so that I can get them out to the range and shoot a little.

Oh, I did find a thread on cleaning them.

Just another AK user that got the Mosin Nagant bug.

In March I picked up a 1943 Izhevsk with barrel/butt plate match, bolt and magazine floor plate mismatched. Pretty accurate. Also, it does not have any import mark. It was a private sale at a gun show.

Last week I picked up a 1939 Tula at Cabel's. It had barrel, butt plate, magazine floor plate and bayonet with the same Alpha prefix stamped numbers and a bolt with the same numbers without the prefix. It was set up as a sniper and had electro numbers on the scope mount with a 2009 PU scope.

(I know the PU was not around until 1942, but my historical poetic license lets me believe it replaced the PE/PEM at refurb.)

Interesting thing is the Serial Numbed has a alpha prefix of CN, and there is no СП or СР by the Tula Star.

At any rate, it is configured as a sniper and after I remove the cosmo I will give it the test....shooting it.

Welcome to the board, we call that a fake PU sniper, they are pretty common, probably one of Century's builds, that '43 sounds interesting , this is an issued rifle I take it, not one of the pretty red shellac refurb rifles like that PU is built on? Could be an early 90's Balkan rifle that they forgot the import mark on ( markings very tiny and up by muzzle) or a Korean era bringhome, too new for Spain.

I go over my weapons with a magnifying glass and document with pictures just for fun and to find out as much as I can. There are absolutely no import marks on the 1943 Izhevsk and I could not find a known refurb. The stock was not red shellac but a light golden brown, beat up. I also believe it was a bring back, but nothing indicating Chinese of Korean service.
The 1939 Tula is a PW Arms import. It has very many little numbers and markings on the rifle receiver and under the barrel and receiver. It is interesting to try to identify them with available resources, but most, as you would know, are unknown. Just more historic mystery.
Fake? The Zombies will never know it is "fake", will they. For me, it is a beautiful Tula 1939 M91 30 that "someone in the past" mounted with a PU scope....

Century international arms or Samco probably made it, or had it made. There was a great demand for PU's after Enemy at the Gates came out in the last decade, the outfits that made them didn't always strive to be historicaly accurate. If you got lucky the build was at least good enough to shoot straight, but sometimes....
I have handled a number of Korean War bringhomes, and well as ones from Vietnam, none had markings of a north Korean, or North Vietnamese nature, they retained the markings of the USSR, or China. It seems as if the weapons given as aid were simply passed out and used as is until they fell apart. The look of the rifle you describe matches that of several Korean era bringhomes I have looked over. Import marks were not required before 1968, and apperantly not used on bringback weapons after that time either as none of the Vietnam bringhomes I have show any import stamps, yet at least two came in after 1971. The golden brown color is typical of the non refurb Soviet arms, the red shellac is something I have only ever seen on a refurb. Bringhome is only a possibility, it could still be a Balkans used rifle that simply wasn't import marked, it's been known to happen, things were more casual 20 years back, and with tens of thousands of rifles some were bound to slip through the cracks.

1942 Izhevsk round receiver
1932 Tula hex receiver, prewar stock
1954 T53
1936 Izhevsk round receiver, Laminated stock
