A rag and some WD40 to thin out the grease, fortunatly the commies used axle grease and not cosmoline. Cosmoline is our stuff, it's a wax like preservative that goes on hot, and liquid, dries to a wax like coating that requires serious scrubbing with diesel fuel to get off. Welcome to the forum

Hi guys new guy here. My father-in-law got me hooked on these rifles back at Easter. I have a 36 Ishevsk 91/30. He has two 91/30s an M44 and an M38. I just got my dad and brother in law each a 91/30 for Father's Day. My father in law and I have cleaned them all and it's been a lot of fun learning about the history of these old rifles. I'll be looking for an M38 of my own before long. I'll post pix shortly

To re finish or not?
Just got my first mosin at cables about a week ago. It's in good shape but i am thinking i want to re finish the stock, leaving the original markings alone.
Good idea or not? It's in pretty good shape . Has the square with the line in it.
Also on the rifle is a triangle with what looks like a i ,in it.
Can't make out the barrel marks very well.
I would love to know the history behind it

New member, first post, I had not bought a new rifle for 20 years, ( yes I know) and fell of the wagon this winter, afflicted with mosinitis and showing other symptoms. picked up 2 M91 and a M44 as well as some other mil surplus rifles, and having a blast doing it,

When it comes to military surplus firearms refinishing is a value killing plan, milsurps are not supposed to look pretty like some mall ninjas toy AR. They are supposed to have the been there and done it all look.

Welcome to the board, and back to milsurp collecting. You didn't fall off the wagon, these rifles may be many things but "new" isn't one of them

New to this site and just registered. I'm primarily interested in deciphering the markings on my '42 Russian 91/30. Some unusual(or maybe not so unusual as I lack knowledge) things I've noticed include: all the serial numbers match EXCEPT for the one on the bayonette, the bolt has a Tula star on one part, but all the other parts have Izhevsk marks(triangle with an arrow inside). Some marks from the bottom of the magazine: backwards R and what looks like an incomplete B. just in front of those stamps and on the stock are two B's, two ovals with lines in the centers, and one square with a line in the center. I want to take high resolution photos of the stamps on the receiver(there are around 15) if anyone's as interested as me in deciphering them. Thanks! Glad to be here.

Welcome to the board Jesse, the bad news is that most of the small markings found on the Mosins are unknown, and the Russians don't seem inclined to enlighten us. At one time the rifle did have a matching bayonet but the dealers failed to keep it together with the rifle. Square with a diagonal line is a wood refurb stamp, verticle line is metal refurb stamp.

Hi this is SLC a new member. I would like suggestions on what oil to use on my Mosin.
