You are going out into the woods to pull a hit on Bambie, the gun is going to get banged around as always happens when hunting in the close cover that deer like to hide in. Whatever you hunt with is going to get banged against trees, scraped on rocks, scratched by sticker bushes, splattered with deer blood and guts, mud, water, and tree sap, dropped once or twice. That's what Mossbergs are for, beating the hell out of them, all it has to do is fire once :)

My BPS already has a few scrapes and dings, I use it hard, they just add character. :D

I took the M44 and the BPS to a range today, I would feel very confident taking down Bambi at 150 yards with the M44, but only at 50 or so with the BPS. I could hit a deer at a much greater range but couldn't guarantee a good kill shot further than that.

I thought they wouldn't let you use the rifle?

That's in the managed hunt early next year, the regular deer season I can use any centre fire weapon.

Sounds like you are set to go then, lot of hunters around here wish they could use an M44, or would once it was explained to them what it was, shotgun only here.

If it was me I'd keep my shots to about 50 yards unless using a rifled slug barrel, if it was me, but at 100 or more I need glass just to see deer properly. I can't make out the kill zone on a deer that blends into it's surroundings as well as a whitetail does, not with open sights on a antique gun or shotgun. Now at 50 or so yards, it's dead deer.

Same problem here, everything is a blur at that range, I would want my 336 Marlin with it's BAS ( big Ass Scope).

I can do at least a 100 yds with the open sights. Here we have to use open on the muzzleloaders and the last one i shot was at 80 or so. They let you use those fancy fiber optic sights though. :D
