Inspection stamp, common in almost every country in one form or another, but especially in the commie countries. How many layers of poly did Bubba slap on that stock? I can just about see well enough to shave just using the reflection in the photo.

ahh I see, thanks JYD. Always helpful

Its all Oil based, no poly =P (unless you mean't polymerized Oils)
all it takes is a good base of oil on the surface of wood to seal it all up then with 0000 steel wool you smooth out the layer of dry oil to give it the smooth look then a fresh layer to finish it off. Kind of like smoothing primer out to fill pitting on a paint job for a car
if I stripped it down the grain of the wood would still be there.

wow nice, being of that year with no mark it might have even seen action in Vietnam and we can only hope/romanticize its a vet bringback since theres no import mark. (unless theres papers proving it, then you strait up know thats the case). Means the rifle has probably seen a good deal of history. Try not to bubba it too much Like my 53 ended up. Mine came to me finished and missing parts (bought it to shoot) and since it was already ruined (the original finish that is) I went ahead and did this one to make myself happier when I look at the rifle and to stabilize it while out in the field

Welcome to the board, no import mark, nice, some early inport marks were very tiny and up under the muzzle, double check it as they do get missed sometimes.
