I have bought 2 of the Very Goods and 2 Excellents from Buds and they seem about the same to me. I am not knocking Buds, I am just saying. All 4 were in great shape overall, one of the barrels was a little dark but not too bad.

For only 10 bucks difference, it is probably just a hand pick. It's most likely they are coming from the same crate, and therefor the reason they are all close to the same. One thing about a hand pick to remember is unless you do your own picking you will just have to trust that the unknown guy doing the selecting sees things the same way you do.

Hand pick to me means that someone reached into the crate, or the top of the pallet and picked up the rifle then stuffed it in a box and sent it to you. I never paid extra for that and always got nice rifles.

Buds gun shop

When I ordered my M44 from SOG, I did hand pick and specified "blonde stock"

Sure as hell I got a light colored m44 with "blonde" pencilled on the end of the box.

If you read the fine print, you usually get the best pick of 5. If all 5 are average, you get an average one. But it is the best of 5.

I only bought one M44 that was a random pick, a 1944 M44 from Aim back when they were $79. The others I was buying for a specific year so they were all from individual dealers, or private sellers, I had seen pics beforhand and knew what I was getting. That went for most of the other Mosins as well. I think I bought a few M38's from AIM that were random, all 1942-43's, they are nice, and one M91/30.

I kinda like the idea of sight unseen, i mean as long as the dealer is reputable like AIM and J & G you should be ok.

Jay, when I bought my first rifle a few years ago I bought from the J&G ad in Shotgun News. 59.95 plus shipping. I didn't know about Mosins or handpick or nothing. What I got was a 43 Izhevsk in a pre-war stock with a perfect bore. They must have been so plentiful with mirror bores back then, because now when J&G has one like the one I got that day it ends up in their Collectors Corner section for about 150.00+. I guess the mirror bores have been culled through. I also notice that some places have a "bore selection" as opposed to a generic hand pick.

I was collecting by year and arsenal and needed very specific dates, random pic rifle off the pile just wouldn't cut it for that. I never worried about sight unseen when I did get them, I was dealing with reputable company's.

The only thing that could be better is getting a nice blonde with M-44 penciled on her box. :D
