Bent Cleaning Rod

Post by RussianGunFan »

I took apart my Mosin and gave everything a good inspection. And I noticed that the tip of the cleaning rod has been bend. Is there a good and safe way to unbend it? It is the part that what the threads for attaching the cleaning head attachment. I could try posting photographs if needed.

the rod is heat treated. that said you may try fitting a pice of tubing over the threads and supporting both ends with bend in middle close a vise to rebend it back. i had 3 extra rods ,but sold all 3 as of yesterday.
how bad is it?

It's not really bad, but if I want to use it as it was intended to, I can't get it to go down the barrel with out it rubbing on the sides. I'll post a picture later so everyone can see it.

Thanks, but I would like to keep the gun as is. It has all the original parts.

Don't use it for cleaning anyway. Bad for the barrel when not bent. If it fits where it is supposed to then i would just leave it there. Use a brass or fiber rod for cleaning. :D

Yeah, I don't use it for cleaning, but I just wanted it to be as good condition as possible. That's why I never tried to bend it without asking first. Don't want to break it after all.

I have used a dead blow hammer and a small anvil to straighten bent cleaning rods for years. It works great but don't try and straighten the head on one as some are brazed in place and will break off in a single blow. I have seen a couple that are brazed together in the middle to repair them, you don't hammer on them either. Now if some smart ass wants ask me how I know  I will admit to learning things the hard way but I will always try and share my stupidity with others to save them the red face! There was a guy who used to straighten bent truck axles using an electromagnetic method, but I forget how it was done. The cleaning rod is also hard steel, should work on it to remove bends, but probably requires more equipment than most people have on hand. I think a welder was required, a powerful tig welder, and a flat iron surface, dam, wish I could remember more, but that was 30 years ago and the man who did it passed in '96.

Thanks guys. Sorry I haven't been online. I might have to try zeebill's suggestion, but for now, I am just a little too busy.

Take your cleaning rod out to the hardware store, find a nut that threads on to cover the threads. Screw it on, you may need two.put the end with the threaded nuts in a vice and un :2cents: bend it.

Yea,I know,I said"nuts in a vice"' :chuckles:
No really...it will work.

celt1314's suggestion about the vise worked. I couldn't find any nuts that would fit so I just put it in there and bent it little by little. It's straight and can be run down the barrel now. Not that it will, but it is nice to know it can. Thanks everyone.
