I have a question about the rear sight

Post by RussianGunFan »

This is my first Mosin Nagant. It's a 1942 Izhevsk Model 91/30. Now on to the real part...

I picked it up from some guy that had it is an ATI stock and the rear sight assembly removed so he could "scout scope" it. Luckily, the original stock came with it and so did the rear sight. It's back in the wood stock where it belongs, don't worry. But, the rear sight leaf doesn't snap down if you lift it up. When I slide the rear sight slide to about the "13" and then back, the sight leaf just stands there and I have to lightly push it back down. Did either one of us do something to the rear sight assembly? Or do you just have to slide it back and push down at the same time? Sorry for not knowing the most about the Mosin Nagant rifles.

There is a leaf spring that is supposed to be under the upper sight section, it gives it a sort of "detent" that holds it upright while you move the slider, but should hold the sight down firmly against the base once you flip it down.

Alright thanks a lot. That answers my question. I was just wondering if that guy did anything else to the gun that I didn't notice before buying it. I'm really glad he didn't cut the barrel down yet.

Welcome to the forum :)

Thanks for the offer, but I don't really want to buy a sight. Mine works, and I really don't think I would need to shoot anything over 1,300 meters away. I was just wondering if it was normal or not.
