Stripper clips

Post by emerson51 »

I just bought my first 91-30, a 1932 model from Izhvetsk (sp?). I took it out for the first time this weekend to shoot, and tried loading with the stripper clips I bought. I could not push the rounds down into the magazine. In fact it was kind of hard doing them even individually. They are pretty tight in the clip. Is there a trick to loading from the clips, or do I possibly have inferior clips? Thanks.

Yes there is a trick, The bullet on top of the first bullet has to have the rim over the rim of the bottom bullet and so on. then you load by taking ahold of the top bullet and push them down with the rim of that bullet. Somewhere there is a video but i havent found it yet. But here is one on the working of a mosin, notice how the bullets are stacked on each other

The Mosin stripper clip is a pain in the ass at the best of times, the best of them will be Russian or Finnish marked, or from one of the East block countrys. The only aftermarket ones I heard of that were any good at all used to be sold on eBay by a guy called uglycarfan, that information is years old, but you can try and see if he is still selling. Try gunbroker for the real thing, there were some Bulgarian ones showing up, the best I found have the Izhevsk stamp on them.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

I did have the cartridges stacked properly as I had seen a video about that issue. These clips I have I bought from the same vendor as the gun at a local gun show. They appear to be aluminum and have what looks like a very faint triangle inside a circle. I've read where some guys think these things are great. I meet some resistance at the back of the bullet when trying to load them individually...is this normal or is there likely a burr or something that needs smoothing off?
