type of cartridge

there is lot about sight adjustment. how about cartridge size? bullets go up or down do to the weight and the type of rifle. would like to hear what others shoot the best in their rifle! i shoot about anything and can not hit the side of the outhouse. popgun pop pop lost my popgun

I shoot 147 grain light ball, the basic bullet weight, but the commie arsenals never got their shit 100% together, there are slight variations in bullet size, powder charge, and so on, this is why we say to try different kinds of ammo and see what your Mosin likes best, then buy a lot of it.

I can't add much either. I'm still shooting what's left out of the first tin of Russian I bought 12 years ago. Mind you I only had 1 Mosin Nagant up until about 6 months ago and when I bought that first one I lived in California and didn't get out to shoot it much. I'm down to the last 75 rounds or so but I've shot this stuff out of a few of the new rifles I have so far and it's been fine. Fred_G even put some through a few of his. I guess after this weekend I'll be opening up a new tin. All I have is Russian, 19 tins of it, but it's all over the place as far as year goes. Welcome back Popgun.

My 1921 Izhevsk ex-dragoon is liking this 147 Grain Bulgarian ball ammo. It shoots it slightly better than the Russian stuff. I have pulled a bullet and it is a boat tail design loaded with an extruded powder that looks a lot like IMR 4064.

thank you for welcome me back! really missed all! anyway if i get this right. we should all take out different type and shoot in the rifle to find the right one that works?? i still have a problem with shooting surplus ammo. what about noncorrosive ammo? i have only shot new ammo as i hate to worry about cleaning. still do not like to put hot water down the barrel.just me. i shot some ammo from greece and shot ok. any other you can offer???? popgun pop pop. this dam comp.will not pull up my popgun . oh well!!!

Well...........so far my rifles shoot the old Comm-Bloc 147 grn sh*t about the same. I get the occasional flyer but seem (when I'm thinking) to be able to hold "reasonable groups" (as defined by minute of "enemy" MOE) center body mass at 100. Its fair to say its fun, and not match shooting that I enjoy so this 'floats my boat' as it were.

Man, you have a lot more self-control than me! Over the course of the first day with it on the range, my Mosin gobbled up 20% of that first tin.

When shooting with friend up north I can eat up a spam can right there but I am shooting five or six Mosins.

If you want a non-corrosive option, here is one that is as close to Russian milspec as it gets. My only issue is that it is twice as expensive as surplus, and has about the same ballistics. In fact, this production facility is the "188" factory which produced a lot of the ammo from the 70's and 80's which, of course, has corrosive priming.

If you want to get around the hot water down the barrel method of cleaning these rifles, send me a PM and I will tell you how. I don't clean these guns like black powder; I don't believe it is necessary if you use the right stuff.

I guess it is expensive, handloading with cast bullets is another option, cast lead can produce surprising accuracy out of some of the more worn bores that sometimes show up on these rifles.

Cleaning after corrosive primed ammo is really not as hard as it sounds. Get some of the current Russian or Bulgarian spam can ammo and go have some fun. It does not hurt to try some of the commercial brands, but cost will cut down on shooting times, which reduces fun. I have had good results with the 174 grain Silver Bear FMJ, but the rifle I am shooting it in is "unmentionable" So I have refrained from posting a range report on it with that ammo.

Some rifles I have prefer 147 grain, the M91/30s, M44s, the Finnish rifles seemed more accurate with the heavy ball rounds like Bulgarian yellow tip. The only commercial ammo I have had an issue with was the 174gr Bear ammo, it keyholed from 2 rifles, plain inaccurate in 2 others.

If your lucky enough at a show to run across some Czech silver tip ammo in the blue boxes, that has always shot well for me. And if you see Albanian ammo, run, run away

The Albanian stuff was unpredictable sometimes, some rifles hate it while others shoot it fine. Overall most of my Mosins would do OK with it, at least stay on the paper forming some semblance of a grouping. The Czech silver tip I stocked up on and have a carefully hoarded stack of crates, great stuff.

Yup, the Czech was one of the few things I hoarded.

The Albanian ain't totally horrible, It does go off but sometimes you have no clue were it went. Just quality control at it's worst, loose bullets, dented cases and inconsistent:D

The 147 In my Izhevsk shoots lower at 50 yards than the 184 grain does....which is good for me i can hit things better..i can pretty much put the bead right below what i wanna shoot and hit it
