Histiology of individual rifles
Histiology of individual rifles
Are there any resources for tracking the histriology of individual Mosins? My father in law has taxed me with the chore of trying to track the history of his 1938 Tula M91/30. All I've been able to find is irrelevant empiricals like "Rifles from the Tula Armory were more widely issued and saw more combat which is why it is far more dificult to locate a Tula with matching bolt"(sic). That is not tremendously helpful when trying to confirm issue, battle use and any historic signifigance to the individual rifle. Ugh, this is what I get for marrying a woman who's father is a military history buff! Any help would be appreciated greatly, especially since this Tula does have it's matching bolt.

Well that stinks. I guess the soviets either did not keep the kind of records the US military did or just does not want to make it available. We have the complete histriology on my father in laws Remington A303-A4 sniper. I wish we could do the same for the Tula.

Re: Histiology of individual rifles
You will find there is alot of numbers matching of both tula and izzys and also alot of forced matching (ep-electro pencil) of both. There may be records but the soviets won't release them i'm sure. If you find some different marks on some of them it may help a little but it also may not as there are a ton of marks that nobody knows what they mean...So buy a few and have fun

Izhevsk made more total rifles than Tula, so I don't see how Tula's could be more widely issued.

I wanted John Paul II 's Mauser in the photo posted on the old forum, anyone know that SN# and somebody out there may even own Hitlers WWI Mauser and not know it. The Russians had over two million women in uniform and fighting, for all we know your fathers Mosin or mine was carried by a girl. I've always wondered if these things could talk what stories they would tell?

There's really no way to track the history of any military small arms weapon used in conflict. Especially Russian.
