Took Another Blind Plunge - Long Branch LE

Post by martin08 »

Well, maybe it wasn't too much of a risk. A fellow Gunboards member gave me a head's up on it from a local shop. He's good that way. $280 after taxes. Very nice Lee Enfield.

No 4 MK I*
Long Branch
1943

Matching numbers on the receiver collar and bolt handle, with sling and bayonet. All other parts appear to be Long Branch. Has the England and pressure stamps. Not sure what the knox form stamps mean, nor if the furniture cartouches denote refurbishment? Original? Two groove bore with extremely sharp rifling, and my bore pic skills stink - it's not dark as the picture suggests, bright and shiny with a bore light with no pitting, excellent crown.

A little bit of reading from some excellent threads tells me that the peep sight on a '43 is correct. And the "FR" cartouche on what appears to be age/wear matched wood means that it was issued to the French Resistance (as good a theory as the rest. Ha!). If there were field repairs needed or done, I can't see them. Maybe it was factory refurbished?? Don't know, but any commentary is welcome.

Lots of pics, and thanks for looking.

$280 for a beauty with a bayonet...VERY nice! Great markings...nice dark stock...I love it. 8-) The matching bolt is nice. I have read that every bolt was fit to each particular rifle. There are some interesting armorers notes detailing how the bolts were fit to its own specific rifle. Apparently the Lee-enfield bolts are interchangeable but that doesn't mean they have been fit properly...from what I have read. To have a matching bolt should mean that it has been fit to that particular rifle.

Good info on the bolt B-O, I hadn't come across that yet.

Nice one, Martin.

It's very hard to go wrong buying an Enfield, they are well made rifles. While non refurbished rifles are out there, I have some, most saw some sort of repair over their service life. Fortunately the British government isn't as paranoid as the Russians and just about anything you ever wanted to know about the Enfield is available in many books. Strip the rifle down and start decoding all the tiny stamps on the metal and the wood, they will tell the rifles story.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.
Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit soft.

Nice. I still need to find one (or more) from England. Your opening up a whole new area of collecting. Good Job. Love those Enfields.

Very nice Martin, congrats :)

Not counting name and serial numbers, I counted 38 marks! There is probably some faint ones I don't see. Man, this rifle has defintely been there and done that. I really like the "&" mark. I haven't seen that on a rifle yet.

Awesome find! Great price too :toast:

Thank you, gents. And thanks for the info, LC.

I'm finding out that I'm a little behind the learning curve on these, but it sure is fun. 8-)

Hi Martin08

Very very nice original condition No4  You do not see many like that most have been cleaned to look new. The stamp on the end of the barrel NP by the bayonet lug,
is for the London proof house, England, as I can't see a date under it, difficult to say when it was done, sorry. The stampings do not look recent.
Enjoy taking her to the range...
