Uudenmaan Rakuunarykmentti m/27rv

Post by WSarchet »

M27rv.jpg
My m/27rv from 1934 marked to 4th Squadron Uusimaa Dragoon Regiment (Uudenmaan Rakuunarykmentti), rifle 39. Built on a 1902 dated Tula receiver.

The cavalry rifle (ratsuväenkivääri) has a bent bolt knob with checkered underside, a short 24" barrel, a stock with cutout for the bolt knob, and a sling setup copied from the m/91rv, which itself copied the setup of the Mauser 98a rifles that had earlier been issued to Finnish cavalry.

Clockwise from top left: Matching bolt handle; connector number; sling loop on barrel band; bolt knob underside and dish cut.

Clockwise from top left: Tang date and Tula hammer; Box SA and other markings; assembly number and other markings under shank; "4" on underside of barrel.

L to R: Disc; underside of disc and cardboard spacer; inside of stock - possible sketch or maybe a crude bow and arrow drawing.

H I (presumably H II misstruck) under the buttplate.

Stock splice.

Wow. That's an odd duck. Very nice.
“Freedom is the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.” George Orwell, English novelist, essayist, and critic, 1903-1950

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Very nice catch. Small number (ca. 2,200) made, and much smaller number survived the WW2. The two Finnish cavalry regiments (URR and HRR) were prestigious and could be even considered elite units. Especially the URR suffered heavy casualties in battle of Vyborg bay in summer 1944, losing over 200 men KIA/WIA/MIA on worst day.

Thanks everyone! I'm getting a sling made for it as well and am hunting for a 4/URR marked saber.
