S&W 1940 light carbine.

Post by steelbuttplate »

I just learned the story on these. They were a S&W contract for the Brits, and were sucky weapons. So sucky the Brits wanted their money back, and ended up getting paid back with Victory S&W .38-200's. They were also anything but a "light" carbine, made entirely of machined metal.

Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

No, only found on the internet. I'd never heard of it. The bolt and chamber are completely enclosed, no way to clear a jam. They also had the same problem as the M 16, built to the wrong ammo specs. They would come apart after a few hundred British 9mm rounds.

It's what happens when an American company makes a rifle for a foreign power chambered for a cartridge that foreign power stole from yet another foreign power, and an enemy one at that. Why the British suddenly got over the whole not invented here thing were 9mm Luger was concerned is beyond me. If they decided to rip off the 9mm cartridge why the hell didn't they boost the design for the MP38, or 40 and have S&W make that for them too?

They had an auto short rifle, with the clip sideways. Was it a 9 ? The Sten..... was a 9x19, musta replaced the S&W, the Sten was designed in 1940.
