boxed 7.62x54R in .50 cal ammo can?

Post by matt167 »

I know how many 7.62x39 rounds fit boxed in a .30 cal can, but how many boxed 7.62x54R fill a .50 cal? I'm looking to fill a can, and need to know how much to order ( I have more than enough now, but never enough ).. I'd rather have more cans boxed and packed neatly than loose rounds

Mine is still confined to the cases and cans that they came in, so I have no idea. If I had to guess, I would start with a dozen boxes of 20.

Turns out I had enough boxed ammo to re organize one can into 7.62x54R and the answer is 13 boxes of 20, with room for 2 long boxes of 100 rounds of .22LR just because.. I still have a lot of Russian surplus, but the individual packs from the spam cans are neatly packed into .30 cal cans, as that is what I bought at the time

That entirely depends on the size of packaging that the ammo you buy uses, they are all different. I know that the Czech silvertip in the blue green 20 round box's is the same size Uncle Sam would pack US M2 ball in . When I busted open another case of Czech 780 rounds I would pack a regular .50 size can with 400 rounds worth. That's how Uncle packed the cans when using the 20 round box's, 400 rounds of .30-06 per can in 20 box's.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

That is what I just discovered. Currently All of my boxed commercial 7.62x54R ammo is in long thin boxes ( Tula, Red Army Standard and some PPU ), all the same size, but it does waste a lot of space in the can.. I JUST discovered that the Wolf brand, appears to have a package the same size as the Russian surplus I have, and if that is the case, then it will pack neatly into either a .50 cal or .30 cal can.

Yup.. when I asked the question I had not yet inventoried how much I actually had, and was able to organize most of what I had into a can.. Dozen was closer than my guess because I really was drawing a blank lol.. But really I don't like the way they pack. Lots of wasted space and they fit loose. Putting 200 rounds of .22LR in with 7.62x54R seems silly, but I had to fill the gap

I think the Wolf packages will fill a can better. Image vs Image

Ok so JYD was spot on.. Wolf Military Classic for sure, is packaged exactly like the Russian surplus stuff, and exactly like Uncle Sam packaged M2 ball.. There is a stapled paper package inside the box. This will pack in either a .30 cal or a .50 cal can

I was thing 480 in those small square pacs, first time I filled one I counted. You could compare the can size to a spam can and maybe get a conception of what they hold.

I'd have to open the box and count, as I now put all the Wolf and surplus into one .50 cal can, but either one fits 2 levels of the packages standing straight up, perfectly. I forget how many is in the level, but 12 per level sounds right and 24 boxes would be 480 so that seems right
