Pietta 1861 Colt Navy

If it fires black powder, it is discussed here.

Pietta 1861 Colt Navy

Post by Sonny »

Well my black powder family is growing.

A Pietta 1861 Colt Navy .36 cal.

I'm shooting 20 grains of FFFg behind a .375 ball.It shoots a bit high but not to bad.

Nice I like it a lot. I've got an 1979 brass frame 36 cal ASM 1861, that looks like it has never been shot.

I have a .36 also, I built it from a kit back in the 70's.

I have a couple of Piettas that will likely never be shot, by me at least. An 1858 Remington .44 and an 1851 Navy brass framed .44. Beautiful guns!

Not a good picture but here is my 1979 ASM 1861 Colt Navy. Funny part is my cylinder doesn't have the Naval scene engraved on it. Which leads me wonder if the cylinder was replaced or mixed up with another gun by the previous owner.

Cylinder is in 36 cal, and locks up tight, advances with the pull of the hammer, and is always indexed properly. So who knows!

So I was out at the range today shootin' my new pistol but had some problems.

I'd load all six chambers but on average I'd get a light hammer strike on two out of six. After I put the caps on all the nipples I'd use the eraser end of a pencil to push all the caps on nice and snug.

Is there a way to increase the hammer spring tension? Or am I doing something wrong? I don't know but it's frustrating when you pull the trigger and all you hear is "click" :vsad:

Back in the day Pietta sometimes suffered from these sorts of irritating quality control issues. Did you strip down the revolver to make sure all is well? Everything is in place and adjusted? Parts are available to replace that spring if it's weak, call Dixie Gun Works .
