Czech ammo question

Post by Shelbygt500 »

Hello
I bought this Czech ammo about 10 years ago. According to 7.62x54r.net and the back of the bullet it's a BXN/53.
Any one know where I can find ballistics info on this ammo?

Thanks

This is probably as close as you can get on the net.

The "Tz" is the designation for heavy ball, http://7.62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinAmmo012.htm, with a lead core and a bimetallic (plated steel) jacket. I've read that they later made a steel-core version but I haven't seen any details on it. I believe that light ball designation is "59" or "Vz59".

Czechs made only LB steel-core ammo, HB they made only with lead core.

Thank you. The mention of Czech-made steel-core heavy ball was years ago in some forum thread that I can no longer locate. So, to be formal, only Hungary ever made steel-core heavy ball?

I've never seen nor heard of any steel-core HB Mosin-Nagant ammo from an other country than Hungary.

A few years ago somebody had Czech yellow-tip heavy ball for sale. It was a good deal as the containers were bad but the ammo was fine. I bought some and it still sits in the 50 cal boxes I transferred it to.

I have some of that. I also have Bulgarian HB that I think is steel core. It is in 440 round tins and was sold a long time ago now. I know I was run off the range with it because it was magnetic and I don't think it was the outer part of the round. I think it was steel in the core. I'll have to go look.

My first can of ammo was a 300 Rd can of yellow tip Bulgarian. 182 gr bullets. I opened it and shot some, bought some more and have sparingly used it occasionally. I was able to trade awhile back for another can of it and it is not getting opened.

Well, gentlemen, I have to correct my former statement. I recently got my hands on a few Czech-made heavy ball rounds in German-labelled cardboard boxes (so obviously produced for East Germany). The rounds are headstamped "ZV" and "59".

I pulled a bullet, only to find out that this ammo indeed has a mild steel core. Bullet is of boat-tail type, its weight is about 181 gr.

Just two years earlier the Czechs produced HB ammo still with a lead core boat-tail bullet of about 183 gr.:

BTW - "bxn" and "ZV" were the same manufacturer, i.e. the Sellier & Bellot plant (then called Blanické strojírny, n.p.) at Vlašim, "ZV" ("Zbrojovka Vlašim") being used for export orders.
