If you can't shoot it, shoot it.

Post by Mike »

I spent this weekend in the woods hunting turkey, this guy came to say hi. I guess he knew he wasn't in season and so was completely safe! I carry a gun and a camera, if I can't shoot it I like to photograph it. :D

Yeah, he wasn't happy to see me, he stood there stomping his hoofs, but I never moved and eventually he gave up and just roamed off. He was only 20 yards from me, what I didn't see until I moved and they took off where the two huge deer behind him!

However, I now know where I'm going to hunt deer during the regular season.

Don't worry, you'll likely never see a deer there again during season.

Years ago, my old dog and I were sitting in my truck sharing a snack after a walk looking for upland. About 75' away, out of the scrub comes a big whitetail buck. He sauntered out, looked at the truck for awhile and wandered away. The poor dog stared at the deer, then would glance at me with a "Well?" sort of look.

I saw a nice 8 pointer there last night - and missed! I'll try again tonight.

I've gone out a couple of times but not too "dedicated"...I generally stroll out to one of the spots we scouted out earlier and sit there for an hour tops. Not real early in the day, either...
The guy we're in the process of buying the property from came down day before opening day and brought a buddy along, we all went out to our respective spots and he shot a doe at about 8:30AM opening day and split the meat between us and his brother, so we've got a few roasts, a backstrap and a bunch of meat for jerky in the freezer, all the wife has to do is cook him up a venison steak and some fried taters when they come down on a weekend, as his wife won't let the stuff in their house, or even let him cook it in their kitchen. Works out well for us. I still have two tags to fill, the season rolls over into anterless only on the 25th and I still have alternative methods in December as well to fill those tags. Since all our "spots" are only about 3500 feet from the homestead, it shouldn't be a problem as long as I actually get out there...

All I saw tonight was turkeys!

I have my managed hunt next week, hopefully that will get me something, then I'll be trying the alternative methods too.

We left the Polynesian resort at Disney World shortly after noon on Thanksgiving Day. Literally, as I stuck the key in the ignition I heard a turkey gobble. Huh? Did anyone just hear a turkey in the parking lot at DW? Then I saw them strutting through. Four beards and a hen.

They were tearing up all the flower beds and were about half tame. So I assUme Disney released them for Thanksgiving. Had I known, I could have brought that little .410......

Here we go:

A Missouri Managed Hunt, 20 people selected by lottery to hunt on 4500 acres, the State says you can have one deer each. Tonight the contract went down and Bambi came home with me. :D

I figure I should get about 40lbs of meat from her.
