Company Pistol League

Post by Mike »

I thought I had mentioned this before but can't find it.

One of my coworkers came up with the idea of a company pistol league, I work for a company with a lot of firearm enthusiasts, hunters and competitive shooters, the biggest complaint everyone has is that we don't shoot often enough, the idea was the league would get us out to shoot.

There are 12 members, because we're all busy each round can be shot any time over a two week period. Each round is head to head with another member, we get to shoot against all the other entrants. Every round is different, and it is getting harder as the competition progresses. We each shoot 40 rounds out of our pistols at various ranges and sometimes one handed, then we shoot 10 rounds out of our opponents, 5 practice, 5 scored. We love the format, we get to shoot a bunch of different guns.

The rounds can be shot anywhere we like but I asked the range where I shoot skeet if they would offer us a deal to shoot at their indoor range, and did they! They charge half the price of one lane, give us two lanes and give us a target each! Most of us are now taking an extended lunch to shoot there.

I'm loving the range time, and my shooting is improving considerably! I have never considered my self a good handgun shooter but now I'm happier that I can hit what I am aiming at, in the beginning I was happy to hit a 6" oval at 7 yards, today I only missed 3 out of 40 shots at 15 yards!

We now have a long list of people who want to join us for the next league!

Sounds like fun, the only handgun I shot well with is the 1860 army, the others I manage ok only at closer ranges if the target is not moving much.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.
Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit soft.

I'm using my Ruger Security Six, I'm doing pretty well with it. So far I've also shot one Springfield 9mm, the trigger on that sucks as much as my XDs trigger, two Glocks, a 9mm and a .40, I liked the .40, soft shooting and accurate. I've shot two Beretta 9mm pistols, one with a trigger job, I'm not keen on either though, the trigger pull is too long and mushy.

Today I shot a Kimber 1911, it felt OK in my hand, the trigger was good but that sucker shot 5" low at 7 yards! I took my Nagant with me today too, my opponent put 7 rounds through it, he was intrigued by it and the history of them. :D

Funny thing is, three of my co-workers also work part time at Cabela's, two of them behind the gun counter. :D

First time I shot the Uberti Colt I was hitting the target at 65 yards, that's unheard of for me with any handgun, handguns just aren't my thing. Best use for a sidearm is for fighting your way back to your rifle if you are stupid enough to separate from it in the first place. I had a 40 grain charge of FFFG and a round .454 ball, for some reason that piece just aims naturally. Of all my BP revolvers that's the only one that shows some wear on it, holster wear, a scrape or two, I shot a lot of hanging hubcaps with that Colt.

I need to practice with my BP revolver a lot more, for some strange reason they won't let me shoot it at the indoor ranges.

This is very cool Mike. We used to do something similar at work, but no competition. Just a couple of us would slip out to the range for lunch.
