Unfortunately this was a test to see if it was good enough for deer hunting, nope, shoots about a 12 inch group at 100 yards! I'll take a couple more out soon and pick the one I'm going to use this year.
On the other hand I got the new slug barrel sighted in on my shotgun - shooting slugs on the bench hurts!
12"? We call that a great shotgun pattern At least it's on the paper, not bad considering the wear some of these type 53's can have on them.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.
Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit soft.

Yeah, it's good for plinking gallon jugs of water at 50 yards but beyond that? Nah! No worries, I have several more to chose from, I was just hoping to be able to use this one because it is already beat the hell up.
And if anyone wonders, I don't have a modern hunting rifle and I don't really want one, a Mosin will do the job just fine.
So get a nice antique hunting rifle, 1950's Winchester model 70 maybe, or how about the lever guns? Model 94 Winchester in .30-30, now there is good white tail medicine.

That slug barrel will be plenty. It should suffice for anything this side of the planet. I sighted in mine and shot a second box of 5, too. Then ended up brushing my teeth left handed that night.

You just missed out!! There was one down the road about a week ago that went. Neighbor shot a 10 pointer awhile back from the porch while drinking coffee. Now that is my kind of hunting! Bill
Friend of mine had a beat to hell Chinese T53, it was so beat up it was beautiful. That rifle always started with the 12" shotgun pattern like you were seeing but once it warmed up, it actually started producing 3" groups. Wish my rifles would do that but no, they all get worse as they warm up!

I have only one T53. Beat to hell and looked like crap when I got it. Rusting everywhere. Cleaned it up and it shoot beautiful. Way more accurate then me. What really amazed me was the barrel. I have never had a rifle where the barrel looked that bad (not cleaned...ever). Cleaned right up and the first few patches were really terrible. But that damn rifle shoots! So, who knows!
I( got it to enter the "uggliest T53" contest a few years back. I was edged out by Millmans T53 (the carp shooter? or something like that).
