I just closed a deal on 2 that I believe are civilian models.
The top dates to 1895(very early in the year), so I assume it's a model 1894. The bottom dates to 1900, so I assume it's a model 1896.
What changes were made between models?

Correction: the top is the New Model Army (1896) dated to 1900. The bottom is the New Model Navy (1889) dated to 1891, upgraded to 1895 stats.

I never made a study of them, but it looks like you found some nice ones. Similar in design to the Colt 1917 .45 New Service, I am familiar with that one, and you would have to work hard to break it.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

A bit delicate in the lock work, but good enough for the USN/Army for the better part of 2 decades. The caliber shortcomings was its downfall. 38 LC.

OK. here's something:
Some of the .38 LC's will chamber .357 Magnum and .38 SPl. because the chambers are bored right thru, not stepped like later ones (and most revolvers since) were. Obviously, DO NOT FIRE .38 Spl. or .357 Mag. rounds through these revolvers!
Nice collection, BTW!![Cool 8-)](./images/smilies/icon_cool.gif)
