91/30 barrel measurements. Tapered mosin barrel?

Post by ourichie »

I have a 1939 Tula 91/30 and was unable to get my bayonet on. I grabbed my calipers and took some outside measurement and got these figures

At Crown - 14.73mm

25mm from crown - 14.84mm

50mm from crown - 15.19mm

75mm from crown - 15.38mm

Front end of top handguard - 15.43mm

Any ideas what could have caused this? Hot loads by previous owner?

It is not uncommon for a bayonet to not fit, most don't. The barrel being tapered is strange though.

The barrels have a bit of taper. As said, most bayonets are tight and need spread apart a bit to fit.

Once again we enter the territory of Communist parts interchangeability and quality control. This was a system were close was good enough, there will be small variations between arsenals in the same country, arsenals in other country's, batches of rifles or parts made in the same arsenal but at different times/era's. The Mosin was designed with sloppy tolerances on purpose so it could operate in the severe climates found in Russia, but this also allows it to function with parts who's tolerances are close to what they should be but not spot on. Such sloppy work would never work for the M1 Garand, or the Mauser were the arsenals put great effort into trying to make each part identical to every other part of the same type, exact interchangeability, perfection. Western arsenal inspectors would have a shit if the work coming off the line to be inspected had the variations common to Mosins. The Izhevsk or Tula inspector likely glanced at it over the top of his bottle, waved a hand and said " Yea, whatever". Anyone who has ever slugged a lot of Mosin bores, or cast their chamber dimensions quickly comes to marvel at the variety displayed.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

HAHA I was thinking the exact same thing. glancing at the Mosins as he takes a huge slug of vodka simply waving them through.
