1942 Tula was in a fire
1942 Tula was in a fire
Tula1942 here. This is my first attempt at posting photo(s). The old girl was in a house that caught fire. The stock is charred though I can't see any indication that the barrel got hot.
All input and advice is welcome and appreciated.
Thanks All,

Re: 1942 Tula was in a fire
Pictures would be needed to get an honest answer. If it got hot enough to char the stock it may have heated the action, receiver or barrel enough to change the metallurgy of the parts. Not safe to shoot.

I'm not sure how to post pictures. I tried several times to add a link to Photobucket without success.
I'll try again soon
Thanks for the reply.

Assuming it's a refurb I would say it's not worth the risk. Just buy another for 150 bucks.

On photobucket, cut and paste the third link out of the four that it lists for each photo and they should post. Works for me anyways.
On Facebook? Check out the non-sporter preservationist group at: OOOPS. Deleted by Facebook because it's evil to even discuss collectible firearms on social media these days.

It's the 4th link that works for me.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Cut and paste the IMG links straight into the message you're posting.

Re: 1942 Tula was in a fire
I would leave that just as it is, mount it on a nice board, put it up on the wall and tell everybody it's a genuine Stalingrad relic. It's hard to tell from the pic how much of that stock is charred, and how much is just beat up, this could be one of the earlier Romanian imports, they can have some rough wood on them. How much actual charred wood did you scrape off?

Before attempting to restore it you can always "proof test" it remotely by putting it in a good secured cradle like a lead sled on a bench and use a string/rope to pull the trigger from a safe distance and behind something very protected in case of an explosion.
Needless to say beware w/ no one else even close to the experiment.

Re: 1942 Tula was in a fire
I too would be leary of that one,if the wood got charred, the barrel got hot.
Hand Guards missing, along with one of the barrel bands.
Will it even stay in the stock?

Re: 1942 Tula was in a fire
Don't even think about shooting it unless you can test the steel. If it got hot enough to discolor the barrel just in front of the rear barrel band, it got too hot.
Not a good idea. It may not go the first shot or the fifth shot, but then on the 50th shot...Joeinthehills wrote:Before attempting to restore it you can always "proof test" it remotely by putting it in a good secured cradle like a lead sled on a bench and use a string/rope to pull the trigger from a safe distance and behind something very protected in case of an explosion.

Yeah probably best as a wall hanger, you can get a 42 tula shooter for bout $200, face replacement prolly a little higher.

This should give a complete picture of this sad old rifle.
I appreciate everyone's input.

Re: 1942 Tula was in a fire
It's a wallhanger for sure. Not worth trying to restore it. Too many unknowns and you can replace it for less than you can restore that one. Follow JYD's advice.

Thank you everyone. I think I'll just hang it on the wall and look for another one to shoot. I really like this forum. Thanks for letting me join, the help and the advice.
