1915 Gewehr 98 (Imperial)
My WWI collection started with my 1916 DWM Luger, and then my 1916 K98az. I knew I needed standard issue battle rifles so I picked this up a few weeks ago. Its an Imperial Gew 98. 1915 Mauser Oberndorf. Its in decent shape. The bore is clean. The stock is sound but doesn't match the action, and it is an obvious later replacement as it has finger grooves which didn't appear until '16. The bolt is matching, and it matches the action. Its not import marked. These are out of the box picks. Since then I've done some modest lite cleaning, first with a rag dampened with soapy dishwater, then a few times more with lite oil and a lot of elbow grease. I got a lot of crud off. It still looks the same, but different if you know what I mean. I had it checked out, and hope to hit the range with it in a week or two..

That one looks to have seen an interesting life, nice find.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

I think you found a nice one, and that rear sight makes these one of my favorite Mausers.

Excellent rifle! Looks as though the stock spent some time in the trenches.
