1933 mosin hex mint condition

Post by AmericanPower »

Just picked this bad boy today from Big5, I don't know a lot about mosins so I figured I'd post it on here and see what you experts think. The rifle is in suspiciously good condition, the wood looks almost brand new, the bluing is almost flawless with the exception of the tip of the barrel, and all the numbers appear to match. This thing worth the $200 I had to fork over for it? If it's really a 1933 then this thing didn't see much battle given its spectacular condition.

Welcome to the board, the rifle looks that way because after WW2 the Soviets refurbished it before storing it away. Some rifles saw more use than others, not every soldier is at the front all the time, but they were all refurbished anyway in the years after ww2 continuing right into the 1970's. Communist make work project that now benefits us.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Although not rare, you did get a laminate stock which is a plus. Nice Tula. Welcome to the forum.

Those numbers are force matched. They were penciled in and not stamped from factory.
That is a clean looking rifle though. That stock is beautiful.

You would be surprised to know it likely saw plenty of battle. The refurbishment program that they went through basically put them back into battle ready condition should a new war be waged.

Welcome to the forum. This is a good read to help understand why the rifle is in the condition it is. http://www.russian-mosin-nagant-forum.c ... index.html

Yup, great looking refub, and I got 24 of them from the mid 20's thru the mid 30's all from AIM Surplus when they were doing the Hex selection for dates. One of them sneaked in that was a MO.

Now from JYD's recommendations I just received 1 gal. of Cosmoline to coat the beauties down with since removing the automotive grease that Uncle Joe coated them with whenever that occurred.

I'm fairly sure if you coat these in true cosmoline if you ever try to remove it you'll also remove the shellac.

It is in fact a 1933, for whatever reason the light made the 3 look like a 5, here's a close up after I took the barrel off for cleaning Image

How come I don't have a Big 5? I'm hearing a lot about that place lately. Nice rifle   Seems like many of the Laminates were electro pencil matched. NBD, I like them anyway. :D
