Ghosts in the machine..... :)
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Awesome pick-up! I'd never seen a Finn capture m38 in a second pattern stock.
On Facebook? Check out the non-sporter preservationist group at: OOOPS. Deleted by Facebook because it's evil to even discuss collectible firearms on social media these days.

People probably kept taking his rifle so he marked it. :D

The interesting part is in script writing versus a crude knife carve. Like he signed it then traced over it a couple times with something sharp. Maybe you'll be able to find out some info on the man. Like my all time favorite gun thread. A. Bierkle's 1917 S&W revolver

This is a great carbine. Finnish carbines (other than the M38 Carcanos) really are quite difficult to find.

Where/how did you acquire this carbine?

It was listed on Gunbroker. Paid $660 with shipping.

And with some more help from Bugelson, and on a very somber note, there were nine fallen veterans of the Winter and Continuation Wars with the rank (private) Sotamies, who very well could have been Stm. Saloranta.

Thanks. I haven't been lurking gun broker much lately, but that's not usually the case. I also still need one of these carbines (along with so many others). It seems I have solidly missed the boat on the mismatched ones being sub $500 guns! They still aren't too expensive for what they are IMO, though the all matching ones have achieved some rather impressive prices lately without a doubt.
