Re: TURKISH Model 1888/05 Mauser
Hello,
You'll want any of the 0.318" bullets listed on either of those websites I gave you.
To make sure we have terminology correct:
Bullet - the actual projectile
Shell (or case or brass) - the piece the bullet fits into
Loaded round, round, or cartridge - the complete powder, brass, bullet, and primer.
They do not make loaded rounds for these. You'll have to roll your own using bullets from one of the above sources. As well, rumor has it that you can shoot American commercial as it's downloaded and uses a compromise-sized bullet, but this is not something I'd personally recommend, either.
Do you live close to Indiana at all?
Regards,
Josh

WOW! Thank you, Desdem. Now I feel even dumber
But I found them. The only thing I have to do now is to figure out which one to buy. I think it depends what I wanna do while shooting - target shooting or hunting small game or large game and so on. Am I right?

Thx again for the information. BTW I'm living in Los Angeles
I understand the terminology
I have already found the loading sheet in Richard Lee's book "Modern Reloading" for the Mauser 8x57mm.
Can you tell me if there is some sort of all purpose bullet available? It sound maybe stupid, I know.
Or do you suggest the 2oogr bullet you already recommended? Is a 170gr bullet also to recommend?

Hello,MuzzleMarc wrote:Ok Josh I understand.
I have still problems where to buy the bullets for 8x57 brass cases - I don't know if I miss here something - I feel very dumb right now. I'm sorry
MuzzleMarc
1. Go here: http://www.buffaloarms.com/300_329_Diam ... x?CAT=4178
2. Go to page 2.
3. Scroll down until you see
".318" Dia. 150 Grn. Spitzer Jacketed Bullet
Item: BAC318150"
4. Press "Add to Cart".
5. Give them your credit card info, and wait for a few days. They will arrive!
Load them with 43.5grns of Varget to start, and then go from there. Don't go too hot in this rifle.
When you get all the rounds loaded and shot, you'll have experience to go to different bullet weights and all that. For now, let's get your muscle memory in tune with your brain when it comes to reloading.

Hello Josh
Thank you very much for the info, Josh. I got it. Slowly I get an idea from everything.
I'll buy this bullet and the other stuff JYD gave me the links from Grafs. Now I can spend my money. I'll do it over the weekend in case some items are popping up ;)
Thx Josh and the other guys for the help.

Marc,
No worries man. Reloading always sounds hard and a bit overwhelming (did for me, anyway) until you actually do it!

This is true. I was a little intimidated by the whole thing until my BIL showed me what to do, and in about 5 minutes I was turning out ammo. You just have to pay attention to detail.Josh Smith wrote:Marc,

Re: TURKISH Model 1888/05 Mauser
I was in the same boat 30 years ago when I started loading my own, first just shotshells, and then rifle rounds, and pistol rounds. Nobody I knew reloaded, and there was no internet so I had to figure it out from books. I am still here and nothing blew up so I guess I did something right

Re: TURKISH Model 1888/05 Mauser
Hello friends
Two days ago I got my first TURKISH Model 1888/05 Mauser. It's a carbine
It's a 8mm reconfigured by Ankara in 1935 and right now I figured out with the extensive help from you guys (Josh, JYD, bunkysdead, millman, desdem12 and some others) how to make my own cartridges for this beauty.
The bore is mirror bright
Some items are already ordered and some others I'll order it over the weekend.
The headspace is ok-I already checked it with a NO GO gauge

That's a beaut! So it's an 88/05/35?
Mine's a lowly 88/05. I think I spent too much on it though (yep, for the benefit of some others, I'll just keep rubbing that in... )

If the 35 stands for the year the weapon was reconfigured I have to say yes!!
I really like it, but I have to wait until I have all items together to make the cartridges.

Nice carbine! I cant wait to hear the range report, you should get a nice little fireball out of that muzzle.

Re: TURKISH Model 1888/05 Mauser
Does this mean you use a .30 neck sizer for a .318 bullet?Hello,
No, the brass cases are just brass cases. You'll have to neck them down, in fact, so the 0.318" bullets don't fall into the powder!
This is how I prepare brass:
1. I size the neck using a .30 caliber (in my case, 7.62x54R sizing die).
2. I size the case using a 8mm (7,9x57) sizing die with a sizing button I turned down to 0.316" or so, then prime the cases.
3. I weigh each individual charge. Takes a while but is precise.
4. I seat the projectile.
As for which one on that page is most precise, I'm not sure... yet. I would guess the heavier projectiles would be best, though. However, I'm still working on the 150grn spitzer load so I may be completely wrong.
I'll let you know. I need to load up a few more right now so I'll report back in just a bit.
Regards,
Josh
I ask, because I was desperately searching for a 8x57 neck sizer for my .318 bullets. One wrote in a comment that it's only suitable for .323 bullets. JYD suggested to contact Midway and/or the Manufacturer what I'll do, but now I found your answer I thought I ask you again, Josh.
