My Crate Coffee Table

Post by zedteamk2 »

I thought i would share my process on how i made my coffee table.

Started with the crate
Image

Cleaned up, found some goodies
Image

I tired using the original top and cutting out the middle. I accidentally broke one of the cross members and it wasn't very sturdy so i gave up on this one.
Image

So i made this - note this is upside down so you can see the brackets
Image

And then i added this second layer of wood, which creates the lip that the glass will sit on
Image

This is on the bottom of the crate - Reused an old surge protector, the black box is the adapter for the lights
Image

The videos i will link at the end show how the lighting works. The controller for the light is under the little accessory shelf. I can set the light to what ever color i want
Image

FYI, there is no glass on it yet, waiting on it to be cut to size.

Here a few videos with the lights in different modes.

Very nice job! I like the idea of making a new top for the table instead of cutting up the original top. That way, if you wanted to put it back to use for storage you could put the original lid back on it. I like it!

Looking good.

glass, I got mine from Lowes. They cut it to the dimensions you want. Tell them it is for a coffee table and you'll get the right type.

I was kind of hoping someone would do a step by step, picture by picture post of one of these. Very nice.
I think a new lid is a good idea also.
Not too sure on the disco lighting. For some reason, I can hear those lights saying "look at me! Take this!"
But I am not a flashy kind of guy to begin with. So maybe that is just me.
Love the display. Nice workmanship.

Thats really neat. My wife has been looking high and low for a crate locally. She wants me to make something similar. :vcool:

Cat- i agree about the flashing lights, that was more of a demo kind of thing.
They have an option where you can pick any color you want by adjusting the red green and blue. i am going to fiddle with that and find something a like. I will also be turning them down as well.
I used these lights at Christmas and wrapped them around the roll bar on my jeep- lots of fun :P.
I will most likely only light it up when company comes over.
Also, if i want to charge a phone or anything, i can plug it in on the bottom :P

Kamikaze - I am getting mine from a business called Binswanger- they have helped me with aquarium glass before.
The Lowes near me only has very thin glass- probably best used for picture frames and such.

The crate itself came from a local gander mountain - pretty new place actually- only been open 6 months or so.
When they get low on mosins, they crack another one open and put the crate out on the floor. My girlfriend got lucky and just happened to be there the day they put it out.
If anyone is in DFW - As of last weekend, the Lewisville, Texas, Gander mountain had 2 crates they had not yet opened.

Now i need another mosin to put in there

I had to make a new top for mine also because the wood was so rough and broke on the corners.
