How many guns is sufficent? and how many calibers?

Post by matt167 »

Now that you guys have gotten me 100% into Milsurps ( Commercial sporters no longer interest me ) and I will eventually go broke from it... I'm wondering how many guns/ calibers is sufficent? Right now, I have 2 Mosins, Remington 597 .22LR, JC Higgins 12ga and the M1 Garand is on order ( I know, not enough yet ).. So right now, I only have to stock. 7.62x54R, .22LR, 30-06 and 12ga.. I want the cool bolt actions, so a Mauser, Schmidt Rubin, Lee Enfield, 03-A3 ect... but how many calibers should I limit myself to, or is there a simple min amount of ammo to keep for several?

I only try to consolidate calibers on my new stuff. Even that goes to hell every once in a while. Milsurps is game off. Just buy it all cheap and stack it deep.

So would keeping 40-60rds of ammo for each caliber be sufficent?...

I do plan on keeping 1k rounds of 7.62x54R and quite a bit of 30-06 for the M1 but more what I can afford in that respect

That's a good start. You can never have enough guns and never enough ammo. NEVER

I don't know that there is a number of rifles or calibers to collect. I just collect what interests me and I like to have at least a small quantity of ammo for every caliber I own.

A .22LR Pistol and Rifle, a 12 gauge shotgun, a .357 revolver or a .45 ACP pistol or Revolver and a High powered rifle, with optic/scope in a caliber of your choice. You may wish to also get a semi-auto carbine in a 'intermediate' caliber.
That's sufficient.

I have a buddy that asked me about buying a crate of Mosins. I told him he didn't want that, because they were all likely to be 1942-43 Izhevsks. He said he didn't care, because he wanted them to hand out to the neighbors if SHTF.

I started with 1 91/30 about 6 months ago, Now I have 10 rifles shooting 6 different calibers. 7.62x54r, 7.62x39, 7.92x57 (8mm Mauser), 30-06, .223/5.56 nato, 5.45x39. Since I live in NY and my supply line of cheap ammo has been effectively cut off as of tomorrow 1/15/14, I stocked up alittle. I have roughly 1000rd or more of each caliber. trust me when I tell ya, I know a few guys that make my ammo stockpile look damn small.

So many guns; so little time...I say buy what you want and what you can afford without destroying your livelihood or breaking up your family. No hobby is worth that.

That depends on what it is and how much I would really shoot it, I have 100 balls for my black powder revolver, that will probably last a while, I have 80 rounds for my Nambu, that will probably last years, I have 250 rounds for my Nagant revolver, that should last a while.

The rest of them, 1k per gun minimum, when I save for a new gun I also save for the ammo I feel it is necessary to stash with it. I'm trying to limit my calibers though, I have 10 and don't want too many more, the ones I'm missing that I want to add one day are 7.62x39, 30-06 and .308/7.62x51 NATO.

How many? All of them of course.

Well, I just ordered 40 rounds of federal M1 Garand ammo from PSA. we'll see if it goes thru.. The workaround is to have it shipped to an FFL or just have them order it.. The LGS I deal with told me just to find what I needed online and he would order it if it was something special and he could not get it thru his suppliers. That was his suggestion in prep for the SAFE act passage
