1st 1895 Nagant revolver found at local pawn

Post by desert drifter »

I found this RGUNS import, arsenal refurbished 1938 Tula Nagant revolver yesterday and passed it up. After loosing sleep on not buying it I went back to the pawn shop this morning. I got there 30 minutes after they opened and told the employee I wanted to buy it. I was informed that another gent was just in and spent 20 minutes looking it over and left just before I walked in the door. I would have been sick if I'd missed it. The only thing that came with it is the holster, no cleaning rod, lanyard or screwdriver. I should be able to find those later and not hurt my investment (just under a C-note).

I bought it purely for historical interest. I can find ammo locally and at gun shows so I might take it out and shoot it a couple of times. If I put it in cue to shoot after I fire the other firearms I haven't shot......it'll probably never get shot.

Here's a couple of pictures. Typical refurb.

Now I'll start reading everything I can about 1895 revolver..hopefully I'll find a couple more in the future.

Looks like a great M1895.
I buy most of my ammo from Cabellas.
Fun to shoot. But really a short range revolver.

Drif, you got a online price from yesteryear at a pawn shop. Awesome. I already know what happens next. The other guys loses sleep just like you did. He goes back to get it, but his story has no happy ending like yours does. Congratulations. I saw some of this ammo the other day at Academy!

If you never shot one, you'll have a blast. It is not a match shooting machine, but a fun little plinker. Reserve a half hour extra at the range. It ain't no speed loader. I have 2. I traded a third one off to my son in law. I have no regrets on that though. I received a pristine '32 Izhevsk red letter 91/30 hex. One of the early RGuns imports.

Our sponsor, Copes, has good Fiocchi ammo for the revolver. For surplus, Graf and Son has been the cheapest for the last year. Email your C&R if you have one for dealer pricing. A year ago it was 3.49 for a 14 round box. I think now it's about 4.50. Beware, buy all you need in a 12 month period. If you don't spend something like 1,500 in a year you get dropped from the dealer list!

Edit-Copes is out of stock. I have en't looked in a long time.

Sometimes J&G has decent pricing. I h aven't bought any in 5 months though.

I really need to go into Graf's, I drive past their brick and mortar store fairly regularly, could be worth a trip for those prices on Nagant ammo. :D

I've ordered a lanyard and cleaning rod found on-line, I also ordered some PRIVI ammo. I'm already set up for reloading and I'm thinking about picking up the dies for 7.62 Nagant. The only other thing I'd need to buy for reloading would be decent .311-.312 bullets.

While I'm on reloading...it seems like this cartridge would be a dream to make shot loads. I think I'll check out the reloading forum and see if that question has been posted yet. I bet 2 or 3 grains of Trail Boss pushing out about a 1/4 ounce of #8 shot would be a fun bumble bee and wasp load.

I'm going to start looking for a box of war period ammo just for historical display if I can find it. Of course.....I don't think I'd pass up another '95 Nagant either.

Thanks for you posts. They're much appreciated.

Check the reloading section before you start putting "hot" rounds through it.

Sweet hand guns, I love mine. I picked up good priced ammo at aimsurplus.com
Notice how the cylinder moves forward to mate the barrel when cocking the hammer ? That's why the bullet sits down below the face of the casing.
Pretty advanced for way back then. I've also been told the 32 round will fire through this gun but haven't tried it myself. The Nagant ammo would probably be easier to find anymore..

The D/A trigger pull can be something awful on some of them. S/A is better but neither is anything like what you will find on a decent American revolver. Still they are a lot of fun to shoot.
Damn, I'll bet that's going to leave a mark! Probably hurt too!
