1942 M39 SKY

1st Mosin, 1st C&R purchase, Black Friday buy from Pat Burns. It has excellent metal condition, no pitting anywhere. The bolt action is butter smooth, trigger feels nice. The stock has no cracks or splits, but has a couple of battle scars. It has some black sections where you would hold it during shooting. I'm not sure what it's from. Blood? Oil? The bolt number matches the reciever. The number on the side (131624) I think is the SK district it was issued to. I'm not sure about the number on the bottom of the mag p4942. Should this match the serial number to be a numbers matching gun? The lands in the bore are very nice, but the grooves could be cleaner. I'm thinking about trying JB bore cleaner. I kind of lucked into this as I had read that the M39 was one of the best mosins and very accurate and the SKY's are kind of rare. I'm from Finnish ancestry and after I got the gun I did some research and this gun fits me. If I had been alive in 1942 I would have been in the SK.

Nice, the black stains are from years of hand oils and dirt , or could just be concentrated areas of baked in Finn wax. Nice rifle :)

Very nice rifle. :) as for the bore, try sone normal cleaning and shooting it firsts before you get anything abrasive in there. You may be suprised by how well it shoots, and how well shooting it and regular cleaning will clean it up.

Very nice!! One of my first M39s was a SkY and I love the way they shoot.

The SkY M39s are much lower production that the SAKO and VKT, around 11,000 made compared to over 100K of the other two combined.

The civil guard district is a bonus as many of the SkY M39s didn't get stamped with a CG number. Yours is from Pohjois Savonlina, which is pretty close to the center of Finland http://mosinnagant.net/finland/Finnish-CG-numbers.asp

I looked at the SK.Y's when they were posted and what impressed me was how fast you had to be to get one. They sold out quick. Well you got a beautiful rifle. I bet that bore will clean up easy enough after cleaning, shooting, and cleaning.

I got real lucky, I was on some forum and saw a link for Pat Burns site on Friday mourning. About half of the SKY's were sold, so I picked the best one left and bought it quick.

I will have to try to shoot, clean, shoot, clean method. I could see how that would work.

What about that mark on the floorplate before the number, it looks like a backwards K attached to a forward K? I have not seen this in any of my research.

After doing some research this gun has an interesting history. It started in 1904 M91 built at Sestroryetsk. After the bolshivec revolution the eagle was ground off. The Finns got it and reworked at Sako in 1942 and made it into a M39. The bolt which has a matching number with the reciever has 3 arsenal marks on it. The Sestroryetsk and the sako marks make sense, but the Izhevsk mark seems odd.

The Finns built that bolt from mixed parts that they had, then stamped the number which matches the receiver. My m39 has a Remington bolt.
