Dumb question about M1 ammo
Dumb question about M1 ammo
Just picked up a Springfield M1 Garand and had a general question about ammo. The rifle is a 30.06 and was wondering what the difference is from ammo marked .30 cal. My gut tells me its the same thing but I would like a definitive answer before I order ammo.

What ammo are you looking at and where is it from. A link would solve this real quick.mike_mays wrote:Just picked up a Springfield M1 Garand and had a general question about ammo. Edit .30 Cal refers to the caliber of the bullet which 30.06 as well as a bunch of other ammo including Mosin Nagant ammo is but it's the cartridge dimension that's important.

Re: Dumb question about M1 ammo
I have an M1 Garard that's a 30 cal and it is not 30-06. I wish it was, but its not. It's more like an old pistol round than a rifle. No bottle neck on the cartridge.

Re: Dumb question about M1 ammo
Exactly. I have an M1 Garand that's chambered in 7.62x51 NATO which is also .30 Cal but is not 30.06 Pretty much the same ballistics, different cartridge though. These are not average calibers for M1 Garands though. 30.06 is what most are chambered in.Brake Weight wrote:I have an M1 Garard that's a 30 cal and it is not 30-06. I wish it was, but its not. On a side note I'd love to see the cartridge that rifle you have takes. It sounds like .30 Carbine.

Have a picture of the rifle mentioned?

This one is .30 Carbine http://estore.thecmp.org/store/catalog/ ... ote5=&max= and is not for the M1 Garand. It's for the M1 Carbine. A totally different rifle.
Have you ordered from the CMP before? I ask because there's some requirements you must meet before ordering.

Re: Dumb question about M1 ammo
Thanks for the reply! I will stick with the 30.06 and stay away from the .30 cal. And I've never ordered from them but i am a member and have met all of the requirements. Re: Dumb question about M1 ammo
You'd be really disappointed if you ordered the .30 Carbine ammo. Here's the difference between them. In the picture below the .30 Carbine in underlined in red and the 30.06 is underlined in Blue. Two totally different cartridges.

You did the most important thing. You asked first and it wasn't a dumb question. We're here to help. Now post some pictures of the Garand when you get it.mike_mays wrote:Wow totally different! Actually there were quite a few were "rechambered" for the 7.62x51 NATO, (AKA .308 Winchester) my Godson was presented with one during his stay at "Canoe University" (USNA '96)WeldonHunter wrote:Exactly. Yes they rechambered some and like mine some were rebarreled. Some early ones actually had chamber inserts.Ironnewt wrote:Actually there were quite a few were "rechambered" for the 7.62x51 NATO, (AKA .308 Winchester) my Godson was presented with one during his stay at "Canoe University" (USNA '96)WeldonHunter wrote:Exactly. I'm not sure if Chris has a chamber insert or a new barrel on/in his. Next time he's stateside I'll ask.

Re: Dumb question about M1 ammo
OK, the M1 Garand is designed to shoot one kind of .30-06, that would be .30 M2 Ball ( 147 grain jacketed lead core bullet) The M1 was not designed with a gas system that could be regulated, so some other commercial .30-06 that might be at higher pressure could damage your rifle. There is an aftermarket replacement gas cylinder screw that is adjustable if you want to play with hand loads, or commercial loads. All the CMP's ammo is M2, most all military surplus .30-06 is also M2.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

I ordered Sellier & Bellot 30.06 180GR. Will this be ok?Junk Yard Dog wrote:OK, the M1 Garand is designed to shoot one kind of .30-06, that would be .30 M2 Ball ( 147 grain jacketed lead core bullet) The M1 was not designed with a gas system that could be regulated, so some other commercial .30-06 that might be at higher pressure could damage your rifle. Re: Dumb question about M1 ammo
Original M2 ball is a 150grain, American Eagle has a Garand specific safe load, duplicates the original loading.

Not sure about S&B either but hornady makes m1 garand specific ammo. It is marked as for the m1 garand.

Re: Dumb question about M1 ammo
What I've always been told is, that as long as the commercial stuff is of a 150 grn bullet with similar velocity to that of GI M2 ball (2700-2800) you should be fine. But like any thing else, there is always the chance of something happening. The disclaimer is for the pressure spikes at the point of firing, while velocity my be close or equal, the pressure spike between the two may not be.
