Pivotal M91

Post by martin08 »

As anyone who has collected for more than a year or two can attest, there can sometimes be a certain item that will alter the direction of your interests. Such as it was with this pivotal M91 that I spied near the end of the day at a gunshow last January. I was already somewhat familiar with Mosins, as there were three 91/30's in the brood, but this worn gun that was priced at $175 had an intrigue and character that caused me to write down a few features, do a little homework, and head back for the show in the morning.

I was early in line, and walked directly to the table with money in my pocket. To my amazement, the dealer had marked down all of his guns by $50 overnight. I walked out with a 1905 Finn'd Tula in an early stock with plugged and open wire hanger holes, Austrian markings and a rear post sling loop for $125. Of course, Mosinitus set in, and couple dozen more have followed in the last nine months. Here are some pics, and thanks for looking.

Neat, an '05 with a reused '99 Sestroryetsk Arsenal receiver 8-) This rifle is SA marked? Very nice patina on the metal, the start of a good case of mosinitis all right :D :D :D

Very nice. My first was a Finnish M91 as well. 8-)
“Freedom is the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.” George Orwell, English novelist, essayist, and critic, 1903-1950

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

No [SA] stamp on this one, just the recalibration of the rear sight.

I haven't tried Milsurp ammo yet. I did try Silver Bear at 85 yards and received a 2.5" group, albeit 10" high. It is cleaned and leaning in the rack, now - waiting for more cousins to join it for posterity and a long rest.

Range day fun in mid-winter Maine.

There out there... I noticed earlier this year the prices peaked, but now deals can be found. I just got 2 [SA] M91's for a very good deal. One was the 1894 Tula I posted & the other is a NEW on it's way. Both had period Finn slings & cleaning rods. Couldn't pass them up for the price. 8-)

The last fair deal I can remember was a couple of years ago when Aim had a decent number of various M91's for 200+ bucks. I don't remember any of them being Finns. when I find one online it is usually drawing too much bidder interest. I NEVER see them in any local (Dallas Tx area) stores or gunshows. :?

To think that I had no clue what my M24 was when I shelled out less than $100 for it 20 years ago, it was part of a two rifle package deal from another collector, I think the other was the 1897 Izhevsk.
