Need a cheap carry gun
Need a cheap carry gun
It appears my XDs is going to at Springfield for a couple of months, my Ruger .357 and my wife's Colt .38 Special are just too big for everyday carry. We're going to hit the pawn shops this weekend and see what we can find. Unfortunately finances are a little tight having just paid for a wedding!
Hoping I can find a snubby .38 or maybe a beat up Kel-Tec.

Hi-Point,....works for me .45 ACP power plus dependable. I put my Colt Commander in the safe and thats is my carry for years. I thought it was just a cheap gun, but I was wrong. Judi and her Mosin's

Every gunshop in America should have at least one used .38 special revolver.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

I carry a KelTec P3AT. It's not for everyone. Carry sized KTs need a lot of buffing and polishing on their feed ramps to make them reliable. The Ruger LCP is a better alternative with a safety.

I carry a Ruger P95, usually $320 new, can't beat them for reliability, you've got a DA/SA trigger with second strike capability.
Re: Need a cheap carry gun
Somebody else has suggested a Sccy, there's plenty of options out there it seems.

Re: Need a cheap carry gun
I recently changed my carry from a .40 to a Bersa 380 Auto....reasonably priced, easy to carry and so far has been problem free. Downside: it's a 380.
My wife has a .38 Ruger LCR she carries in her purse, it also has been problem free and like most wheel guns is pretty easy to use---just pull the trigger.

Re: Need a cheap carry gun
I always recommend a revolver, hands down. Small, 5-6 shots is more than enough, good knock down power. STUPID SIMPLE. No tap, rack and back on target if you have a jam/misfire. Another great thing about revolvers is they cant be taken out of battery by pushing on the muzzle end like most semi autos with a non-pinned floating barrel. Plus, depending on the situation you can have that aimed single action shot
Re: Need a cheap carry gun
Armscor makes a .38 that's a colt copy, steel and runs about $220 new, I've fondled one at my LGS and intend on picking one up. Made in the Phillipines but they have a service/warranty center in Nevada.

Re: Need a cheap carry gun
The wife and I both have a Cz 82, I chose it not because it's a milsurp, but because it fits well and it suited me. All three I own have performed flawlessly and are very accurate. It is a tad heavy compared to newer pistols, roughly about the same as my full sized Glock with a full magazine, but it's never failed, even with the crappy stuff I've put through it. The wife, she is also very comfortable with hers.
I would think something like an older used Model 10 S&W should be fairly easy to find.

Re: Need a cheap carry gun
I've got one, too. It's very reliable and accurate, but too bulky for a CC considering its only a .32acp. My P3AT can't hit a barn at 30 paces, but up close spitting fire it'll work fine.Dan4good wrote:get a cz70 there cheap and reliable
I'd suggest any of the 5-shot, hammerless wheel guns or anything like LCP, P3AT, PF9, small frames like these. Walther has a slim 9mm that's nice. Kimber has a 3" .45auto that is superb. Glock and Sprinfield make a small 9mm. Options are really limitless. Also, with a used pawn shop gun, or likewise, it's already broken in most likely. So the few 100 rounds you'd shoot to make it smooth have already been shot.

Well after lots of research I can find very few bad comments about Hi-Points by people who actually own them. They seem to be the AK-47 of the handgun world, cheap and dependable, I even found one review by a guy who ran one over and dropped it in mud, it still ran!Judi and her Mosins wrote:Hi-Point,....works for me .45 ACP power plus dependable. I just bid on a CF380 on Gunbroker. .380 isn't my favourite caliber by any means but I wanted a fairly small gun and I wanted a caliber we already own because I didn't want to have to start hunting for more ammo. My wife carries a Sig .380, we are well stocked with .380 and I wanted a back-up gun we will both shoot - she DOES NOT like my XDs, way too much recoil for her.
Thanks Judi!

Re: Need a cheap carry gun
I always have to be the different one. I carry a PA 63 Hungarian in 9X18 or my Romanian TT 33 in 7.62X25 and yesterday I added a newly made Zastava M70A in 9mm, (looks just like my TT 33). Both have hollowpoints by Hornaday and Wolf, haven't figured out what 9mm round to use as yet.
