Wartime Tulas
Are these particularly rare or just uncommon? It seems that wartime Izhevsks are everywhere, but I've only seen one 1944 Tula. I know I can spend a while looking up the stats, but I want collector stats and opinions. Do you see a lot of these in your areas?

I can't speak to overall, but I have a 44 Tula, and it's pure warrime. The condition just yells at you when you hold it. I agree though you seem to see leas Tulas out there.

I collect 1944 Mosin Nagants and out of approx 25+rifles i have 10 of them are Tula's. Tula produced less than a third of all war time MN if memory serves me so they will be far less common.

Re: Wartime Tulas
I have at least two 44 Tulas in my collection, probably others as well.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Re: Wartime Tulas
Marginally better finish, but they were still far from their pre war best, and the Tula markings during the war are known for light strikes.davesstuff1 wrote:It seems that there was more pride in work-man-ship in the Tula Plants duruing WWll....

Re: Wartime Tulas
I have a 42 Tula, refurb, purchased from Classic about 3 years ago. Machining on the barrel is better than the Izhevsk ones that I own but still a far cry from the prewars that I've acquired. I did pay for the arsenal handpick when ordering though.

When the wolf is in your face, I doubt that pride in workmanship would be the top priority. Doesn't make wartime rifles any less desirable to me.

Re: Wartime Tulas
Of the 22 91/30's probably 45% Tula vs Izhevsk Hex receiver dates varying between the mid 20's to the mid 30's I don't see allot of difference in machining quality between the 2 arsenals.

My only war time Tula is from the wrong war. It's a '39.

Re: Wartime Tulas
Miller Tyme, what is the draw to concentrate on collecting a certain year MN?
Are there comparisons you make? I'd be interested in reading your thoughts.

About 4 years ago I realized my collection needed focus, I had about 50 rifles with 1/2 being Mosin Nagants, but there was no rhyme or reason to why I bought what I bought. I decided MN's where going to be my main focus and I picked 1944 as the year to mainly collect for a couple of reasons. First was both Izhevsk and Tula where producing PU snipers, 91/30's, M38's, & M44's. 1944 was the only year Tula made the M44, and was one of only 2 years they produced the M38 ( the other being 1940). And there was a fair amount of recycled recievers used by both arsenals in 1944 to add to the mix. From memory I have the following 1944 MN's, and while I now have over 120 MN's and have added other groups of MN's to collect ( M44's, M38's, SCW's,snipers) the 1944's are my favorites, and the focus helps make collecting more enjoyable.

I did back when I had about a dozen, I guess that will have to be a winter project to get a group pic of them all.
