The "38" that you were being told about I assume is a Mosin Nagant M38. It is a WW2 era carbine with no bayonet.

My one word of advice on Mosin fever based on firsthand experience:

Read.

Put that computer to work and read EVERYTHING on Mosins. It helps feed the fire and quell the doubts. Google is my friend.
