Izhevsk Oiler

Post by Chrome Moly Vampire »

I know you guys probably have a hundred each of these things banging around, but it's my first one. I think it's neato. I dare say I like it better than the regular Waffle House oilers. (The term Waffle House oilers was coined by my pal Dcption by the way. He's member here, but he hasn't peeked out yet. He's shy.)

And yes, that's an awfully chubby hand.

One can make a pretty nice little collection with just Soviet oilers. While the Imperial and some of thevery early Soviet ones are pretty rare, the pre-war Soviet rectangular 2 compartment ones, the standard round 2 spout, and the Izhevsk marked single spout can all be found without too much dificulty. With the 2 spout, there are 2 main variations on how the markings are embossed in the front.

There is a pretty scarce early war version of the round 2 spout that is made of brass - I'm not talking about the brass Yugoslavian 2 spout oiler seen with Yugo Mausers that is also correct for Yugo issue Mosins, but a brass version of the round Soviet one.

There are also the little cylindrical ones that the Soviest used with Soviet and U.S. subguns, Mosins, and captured 98k Mausers - there is a very scarce version of this that is basically 2 of these soldered together, bottom to bottom.

And then we have the black plastic ones, with either an Izhevsk "arrow in triangle" marking or a Soviet "box with a line down the middle of it" versions.

So with little effort and cost, one could easily assemble a 6, 7, or more oiler collection with a Soviet rectangular, one each of the round steel ones with the embossing variations, a round Izhevsk marked single spout like the one shown above, a single oiler cylindrical one, one of the black plastic ones ( and like I said, there are 2 main versions of the markings on these) and if desired, a Yugo brass one.

Then there are the numerous Finn, Romanian, Polish, and Chinese variations. I wouldn't say that there are as many oilers out there as Beanie Baby types, but you could build up a pretty impressive display collection with them.

And if anyone is looking to start an oiler collection, do I have a deal for you! I have a lot of 10 nice condition Soviet round metal oilers for sale for $40 + shipping.

6 are the most common round dual spout version with the longer "tail" on the W-like marking, 2 are the scarce ones with the shorter "tail" on the W-like marking , and 2 are the single spout version with the Izhevsk/Izhmash "arrow in triangle" marking.

Besides their obvious use as oilers (not that anyone really uses these things anymore) they make great little pocket whiskey flasks (the 2 spout ones can carry Scotch in one side and Bourbon or vodka in the other, but please remove all cosmoline first), condiment jars for mustard and ketchup for you "Red Army Burgers" fans, sex lube containers to carry your KY Jelly or vasoline in if you are a Democrat legislator or Obama voter, or attractive little mini-vases for little flowers you can present to the wife to sooth her anger when you bring another rifle home.

Thank you for the reply, Marcus. I'm not a Democratic legislator or Obama voter, but this post totally solves my sex lube container dilemma. Come to think of it, this arrow does have a phallic look about it.

No more Waffle House. Now it stands for Wet and Hot.

The wife will be thrilled. Thanks again!
