New Finn Made it M28 Tikka

Post by daveshady »

I was happy, the bore was very dark and the worst of the ones that I have aquired when I looked
at it. But i cleaned it up good and then ran 10 rounds thru her and cleaned inbetween at
sunset and she cleaned up well. Took the crappy look away. Oiled her up and put her in the rack
inbetween the M27 and 28/30 :)

Got some pics and have started to keep a record of markings on parts on a worksheet I made
up easier to do some research and compare notes. ALL KINDS of mfg parts on her!

Tula hammers, Izhevsk Bow and arrows, Izhevsk triangle arrows, Sestroryetsk M91 arrows,
Remington R's, New England Westinghouse F with arrow, has the Civil Guard S. On the extractor has
a SAKO marking.

ser# 32098 bbl and bolt handle has 2098
# S37515 this number is struck thru ib bbl shank but is also on bolt
Bottom of BBL has a nice clear 12040 no clue

Stock repair at aresenal that kinda ruined the stock markings.

Here are some pics

Wow Dave, that's a heck of a M-28!! I would say that is one of the more desirable ones compared to the plain SIG/TIKKA ones we usually see. The thing that makes it more desirable is the fact that it was assembled at SAKO with a TIKKA barrel. Towards the very end of production, the final 3,000 or so have that SAKO gear mark to the left of the serial number. I've been hoping to get one like that for a LONG time! :p

The civil guard number points to this district: http://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lounais-H%C3%A4me

Very cool find!!

I forgot to mention- Your buttplate has an inspection mark on the top, just above the top screw. It looks like this =I= and it means your rifle had an #1 grade bore during the time of that inspection... IIRC it was around 1932-1933. The next inspection was around 3 years later and would have been at 3 O'Clock to the buttplate screw, but your rifle wasn't included in that inspection.

That's neat. I haven't seen one with a Sako cog before.

Thanks for the info and the links Brian, Im still new to the whole mosin collecting
and since starting last year I shifted to Finns perty much. They are different
and not many of them in some variations. The history to learn from others seeing
things amazes me. I started on finns by accident when a kid traded me a M91/30
SA marked Tikka 1944 Dated, traded about 50$ in 9mm ammo for it and 50$ cash.
I thought honestly I was buying an M91 cause there was no hooded sight. I got to
looking at it and slowly started to see stuff and investigate. THEN I REMOVED
the RAIL that was where the sight was to be. Lucky for me the OEM sight was included
in the deal also. :bwink:

Thanks again for your Input! Much appreciated.

Inside the last 20 M28's to ever be assembled-pretty cool!!
I passed that one up when I first saw it (fellow member linked it for me). We knew it was going to go pretty fast, but I have so many-there just wasn't any evidence from the supplied pics to make me buy another one. Just goes to show you must try to verify with the seller when their pics don't show the entire story. It was a nice BIN price and I'm glad someone who will appreciate it was the one to purchase it.
I have a 32K block M28, but its at the low end unfortunately.
Congrats!!!

Sidenote- FB!! Glad to see you're still alive and kickin'
Been meaning to email ya and catch up, brotha. Will do that soon!

Could be worse, you could be watching a movie, surfing the gun forums, and driving....

You know what at a non-busy moment many years ago I sat down and figured out the average cost of all the rifles I had at that time and it came out around $150. I had some expensive ones back then so maybe the unit price was driven up a bit too.

Very nice rifle with many great points taken by me and greatly enjoyed. Thanks for sharing it with us! Bill :D
