1943 Izhevsk in a post war stock, stamped barrel band spring on the front, milled on the rear. The bands were really tight to get off for cleaning he said, he thought if he removed the band springs they would go back on easier. That logic escapes me, how would you push the rear band back far enough the put the spring on after the band? Anyways, the front spring stood up above the wood, he rotated it to get it loose and it came right out. The milled one was down in its slot apparently, it wouldnt rotate. He placed something against the top edge and hit it with a mallet to spin it counter clockwise. The stock had a chunk break out from the spring's slot clear down to the cleaning rod channel. New one on me, and he hadnt even fired it yet.
I told him to glue and clamp it, if that didn't work to call Libertytree for a stock. Maybe I should have told him he probably shouldn't be allowed to have a rifle.
