1924 Izhevsk surprise

Post by mmcghee6 »

Making my way through some guns I acquire last week and came across this one.... Nice surprise! :P I assume this is an ex dragoon at 48 1/2 inches long and based on the markings... look like a Tula hammer on the tang too.
Any feedback or thoughts about this are greatly appreciated.

1897 antique receiver. Nice! If you notice on the top flat, the Soviets overstamped the Imperial crest. She's a keeper!

Lots of early 20s Izhevsk rifles have earlier receivers, if not most. Long discussion on this on Gunboards a year or so ago. I think that the best explanation was that there was poor quality control on Izhevsk receivers at the time so they were rebuilt in the later 20s with recovered parts. Seems more logical than being made with older receivers, which are less complicated than barrels. Seems very common if not universal for Izhevsk rifles 1918-1924 or so.

Homer's right on. I was degreasing a 25 Izhevsk today and it had an antique tang date as well...

If it's a Molot, the markings on the 91/30 will be on the top of the barrel just in front of the rear sight. Trust me, I know...
