1897 Steyr Dutch No.1 OM Cavalry Carbine

Post by ffeng31 »

Well I sealed the deal and the Cavalry Carbine is mine. I dont know much other than this old girl was one of only 8000 No.1 OM (old model) Cavalry Carbines produced and it is chambered in 6.5x53, which is all but non-existent unless you reload. I took a few pics before it got dark this evening . I will post some more once i get her all cleaned up.

I would have sworn that was a bubba job, until I saw those pics in your other thread about this rifle. Very nice. Good find. Is brass available, or do you have to form it from something else? Should be fun, regardless.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

I havent really looked into ammo for it yet. I posted about this rifle on another forum and a member there indicated he reloads for his. Hopefully I can get a few rounds just to say I have shot it and maybe put a few away. I know that LTC has the charger clips so I will at least get a few of them for starters. Now to find a sling...

Great pick-up. I would have thought bubba too. It kind of reminds me of a Krag carbine. I like it.

I just noticed the wood extends down one side of the mag housing. Interesting. Why only one side?

Yes, Bertram makes it, or you can make it easily from .303 British. I have instructions and a few loads
if interested.

I believe it was so the magazine well would not snag on the uniform. Notice how the sling swivels
are on the same side as the wood extension.

Bertram is out of control unless they have changed their prices lately. You can get loaded ammo from buffalo or gads and I am sure gads has brass but probly buffalo also. As stated you can form the brass from .303 and there are dies available if you are not money challeneged
