Looking to start reloading- Questions

Post by zedteamk2 »

So, i want to start reloading Mosin ammo and .40 S&W.
I have been looking around forums and trying to gather as much info as i can.
I need some real world advice.
Is there a good starter kit? and what else outside of the kit would be needed?

Also... purchased some herters ammo, which is steel cased, that cant be reloaded right?

Thanks for the input !

Start with brass case for reloads, check out ponycarmans recent thread in the reloading section, he bought the Lee kit, with any kit you will need to buy the die set for the cartridge you want to load, a load book, and of course the bullets, powder, primers, and cases. There are always extras, that list is endless, but most are niceties, not necessities. Thinks like lube pads, case prep tools, . Read up on that thread I mentioned, a lot of questions are answered there, and yes, the Lee kit is an excellent value, and of good quality, USA made, no overseas unknown shit.

Like JYD said, I have been using a Lee Turret Press for quite a while and have been very impressed with it. High quality product that is very durable and reliable. I use it for .38 , .40, 7.62x54R and 8x56R without any difficulties, although for the rifle ammo I don't use the auto-indexing feature and use the press like a single stage unit.

You will need to get a few handloading manuals, the Lee Manual is very good, and do a ton of reading. And most of all, have some fun, it is a very enjoyable and fun hobby !!

It's a necessary one now that some kinds of surplus is getting scarce, 8mm Mauser, .303 Brit, 7.7, and 6.5 Japanese, 6.5 Carcano, 8mm Lebel, and soon enough 7.62x54r. Privi loads all of these rounds, and is an excellent source of brass, however commercially loaded rounds are expensive, and not always available everywhere.

I just recevied my Lee Breech Lock Challenger kit from Graf and Sons. They were the only ones I found that had it in stock. It was delivered on the 27(only took five days from the day I ordered) but I haven't had the chance to tinker with it yet. I have Lee 8x56R dies, brass and bullets but I cannot find any LR primers of powder. I also have the Lee hand press and I used it to fab up 5 dummy rounds in 8x56R so I can use them for action proving. I don't like to cycle live ammo in the basement  I have the Lee reloading guide and am reading it, but I will buy another one, possibly the Lyman reloading guide.

I've got the lee 50th anniversary breech lock kit. I'm starting out with 38 special/357 mag. I'm waiting till I finish the lee reloading manual until I order powders, primers, and bullets. It might take a while haha. I'm a slow reader. I already have tree lee dies I need as well. Been doing the case prep that I can do. I've resized and reprimed tree brass. I also cleaned the primer pockets and chamfered the case mouths.
