SOG Type 53 Unboxing

Post by Synack »

The brown truck of tardiness/happiness finally showed up late this afternoon with my T53! :D

It's definitely what I was expecting. This was most definitely "rode hard and put up wet." There is one crack that I found so far (SOG said stocks would have cracks.) It's a hairline one the comb of the stock, haven't figured out if I should inject some CA glue in there or use something else to keep it from spreading. Bluing is pretty much gone but I haven't seen any obvious rust yet.

Rifling doesn't seem as sharp as my other two Mosins but it is there.

For $100 it's totally worth it. Looking forward to the cleaning and test firing!

Looks great :vcool: :vcool: :vcool:  As for the crack, you can glue it if you are going to shoot the rifle, otherwise leave it as it is.

Just started cleaning it today. So. Much. Sludge. The inside of that stock was oozing with slime. No rust on the barrel or receiver.

Actually, the only part that has rust is the firing pin, and the tip is bent pretty bad to top it off. (Looks like somewhere along the line the pin was swapped out, no rust on the other bolt pieces.

Anyone ever try contacting SOG for a replacement part? (It's a 'as is' transaction, just wondering if they'd be cool about it.)

Liberty Tree has the firing pin with a spring for $14.

As is is just that. Get the liberty pin, and add a trigger pin while you are at it because if you haven't lost one yet, you will :)

Just found a set of two on eBay for $11 shipped. (Honestly had the cart loaded at Liberty Tree, but the wallet is upstairs and didn't want to risk waking up the kids. :redfaced: )

I'll definitely be ordering a cleaning rod and sling from Liberty though.

Oh you bet! A hundred bucks for a cool looking piece of history that you can also shoot. That's a fine deal.

Love mine. 1956. Bought it at LGS. Little bit of rust on bayonet and on receiver. Other than that not to bad.

Normal for an issued MIlsurp that's been in a stack in a bunker someplace for 40 years. Not bad.
