Bore Pics -- Showing Off a Bit! W00T!

Post by Josh Smith »

Hello,

I got done cleaning out my Gewehr 88's bore. To check any work I do, I usually use macro pictures as well as magnifying tools.

This bore actually went back to almost-new condition. The rust that was on it hadn't penetrated too far down -- looks like it was maybe just there from sitting unprotected for a year in a gunshop, assumed to be a parts gun!

I am rather thrilled.

This means my rifle is in 95% or better condition -- on of the better ones out there -- and the bore is not nearly as bad as I thought!

The only problem is that it's not all matching, but no biggie. I probably wouldn't shoot it otherwise!

Not bad for $37.50, eh?

Regards,

Josh

That is really cool. I wish someone (or two) would do a "how to" photograph your barrel.

Those are some nice shots

Nice job Josh :)

Through many trials and errors on bore pics:

1. I've found that natural light works best when possible. Place the open chamber in the sunlight, and the muzzle in the shade.
2. Get a camera with super macro.
3. Hold the shutter button 1/2 way to focus at a position about 4" from the crown. When it pulls the crown in sharply, keep the shutter depressed 1/2 way, and move to within 1-2" of the bore.
4. Snap photo.

In artificial light.

1. Place a thin sheet of white paper in the chamber with a bore light behind it.
2. Use normal or macro setting (not super macro)
3. Use a black piece of paper with a hole and slip it over the muzzle to the depth of the bore that you wish to capture.
4. From 3-4 feet away, let the camera focus on the black piece of paper, snap shot.
5. Crop pic to bore size and save.

And great save, Josh. Shoot that one a lot!
No words of wisdom come to mind at this time....

Hi Gents,

Some folks were asking to see the crown. Here she be!

I count one small nick. I was going to polish it, but heck, I'm shooting twigs the width of my pinkie at 30 yards unsupported.

How do you rate the crown?

Thanks,

Josh

Are you sure you didn't mean 237.50 or 337.50? That must have been a typo!

I'm showing off too. I'm getting better with my chamber scope. This is the chamber face of my '37 Tula.

That old colonoscope works pretty good. I think I see a polyp in your chamber there LC.
