Cant find non-corrosive 7.62x54R

Post by optikalillushun »

Cant seem to locate and non-corrosive 7.62x54R ammo anywhere locally. Just wanna try a box to see how it shoots, but the only store around here (and its 15 miles away) has is commie surplus.

What are some brands they offer? Winchester?

Where are you at? There are a few that are non corosive and still made in commie land. Winchester, prvi, sellier&bellot, wolf, bear, tula, just to name a few. :D Not all from commie land but non corrosive.

Finding it isn't as much problem as paying for it.

You can always mail order whatever ammo you need from the online suppliers.

At a significant savings over local prices.

Non corrosive & cheap

Reloadable

Also, while looking for ammo I noticed our advertiser Liberty Tree Collectors has some Czech practice ammo available. While corrosive, this is still great low-recoil stuff for the beginner to try. Not a bad deal either. :vcool:

That is a little pricey all right, way to much for casual plinking ammo!

MidwayUSA and Cheaper Than Dirt have a good selection of Brown Bear, Silver Bear, and Tula for around $11/20, give or take. I've ordered from both places frequently for other calibers and it always comes quickly. The only issue is you'll get dinged around $9 shipping due to the hazmat, so you need to order a lot or go in on an order with a friend to make it cost effective from buying locally. The Gander Mountain near me always has Brown Bear in stock but nothing else. I'm used to buying 5.56 for around $10/20 so the non-corrosive 7.62x54r doesn't seem so bad. Besides I'm not going to blasting through 75 rounds in my hour at the range like I would be with my Mini-14. I don't think my shoulder or the Mosin and its stock would be too happy about that :)

I agree that it's high but when you figure in your time to get to the store (now wasted) and you will have to wait and pay shipping and hazmat, it might have been cheaper just to buy that one box, especially considering you just want to try it out.
Damn, I'll bet that's going to leave a mark! Probably hurt too!

Cabelas was selling the PPU for about $15/box. It's non-corrosive and reloadable brass.

Not sure if it's still available but for a while you could get "bulk" PPU with a free plastic ammo can. 100 rounds is really just 5 boxes taped up. Not really bulk. And the plastic ammo can is OK, but nothing to write home about. The USGI ammo cans from SG Ammo are way better.

The Privi is good brass, I use it for reloading my 8mm Lebel, and have had no problems.

The Silver Bear is good ammo. I went through 60 rounds the other day and was impressed. Liked it more than the white box Tula because the case wasn't lacquered and ejected a little smoother.
Haven't shot any brass because of the cost. I don't see myself buying reloading equipment and nobody around here does it for anyone but themselves. So I stick to the steel case Russian stuff.
I just wish I could get soft tip Silver Bear in 150gr instead of 174gr. The 147-150 seems more accurate than the heavier stuff. But I can only find the 150 in FMJ.
I was paying like $11.50 for a box of 20 for the Silver Bear. Not too bad for local shop it seems.

Went to Cabela's last night and found some alternatives for my non-corrosive need. Didnt get any, because i was at my spending limit (try to cap my spending since im not working). But next time ill get a box or two, not really going to be shooting it much now anyway.

Thanks for the heads up on the brands to look for.

Finally picked up some non-corrosive ammo yesterday. One box of black box Tulammo, one white box of "made in russia" like linked from aimsurplus above and a box of some kind of bear (dont know if it was brown or silver).

Now to find more nice weather and see what my MN perfers.
