Take a Knee, Fellas. Original Match 1898

Post by martin08 »

I don't want anyone standing, please. Take a knee if you would.

Many, many pics. No explanations needed, except that barrel bands are now properly installed. And thanks for looking.

Take a knee? My knees are shot  Were ever was this hiding for so many years to still be so original? Excellent :vcool: :vcool: :vcool: :D
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

One viable explanation:

Russo-Japanese war capture. It obviously left Russian hands before any of the upgrades.

The Japanese never altered it? They would have had it at least 40 years, Don't you wish the first American owner had written something under the buttplate? Pfc Wally Fubar captured this rifle off the wall of a Tokyo broth....bar 20 October 1945. It would make life easier for us, and answer so many questions.

Another possibility would be a Boxer Rebellion relic.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boxer_Rebellion

From whence it came is not as certain as where it landed. It will be in New England for some time to come.

Absolutely fantastic!!! That would be hard to top in any collection.

I'm leaning towards Russo-Japanese war too. It's the only thing that makes sense to me.

That could be a good possibility. Our guys fought right along with the Russians in that. I read a good article about that once. One of our guys even dug up an old cannon that the Chinese had buried breech up and had been using as a hitching post. The article said he used it to good effect on the chinese.
Super find Martin.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

North Russian expedition maybe? A trophy of war one of the boys brought back after taking it off a "good" commie?
