1942 Finn B-Barrel M39 / Showcase submission
This is a 1942 Finnish B-Barrel M39 rifle, they are called B-Barrels because of the "B" stamped on the barrel wich is believed to denote them as being Mfg with barrel blanks from Belgium. Both M39's and M91's where produced with these barrels with total production of M39's believed to be between 9-10,000 though exact figures are not known. Even though the barrels are all dated 1942 B- Barreled M39's where all produced post war which explains there post war stocks and general excellent condition. The M39 is considered to be the zenith of Mosin Nagant design as an infantry rifle and are highly sought after by collectors and shooters. This B-Barrel is a mix of Izhevsk & Remington parts, and is "Finn Matching" meaning the bolt and reciever #'s match.

Very nice, my unissued is identical to this one, but I don't recall it having AV-1 stamped on it.

Thanks JYD, bought this one under the idea I would just put it away and shoot my other M39 if I so desire.Junk Yard Dog wrote:Very nice, my unissued is identical to this one, but I don't recall it having AV-1 stamped on it.

Re: 1942 Finn B-Barrel M39 / Showcase submission
I'd never read about the B barreled M39's being post war production, but it makes sense because they always have post war stocks. The heel reinforcement is supposed to have been done in 1956 or later, so I'm not sure if this is original production or a refurb.
I guess it doesn't much matter - it's a good looking M39 and you've educated me just a bit more than I was this morning. Thanks.

Nice. I have an AV1 B barrel also. I will give my vote as yes.

Agreed... Very nice! It's almost a twin to my Unissued B Barrel... Mine has the AV-1 stamp too. A rather rare bird you have.Junk Yard Dog wrote:Very nice, my unissued is identical to this one, but I don't recall it having AV-1 stamped on it.
Got my Vote.

Hmm now you have me wondering too I have nothing in the book about an AV-1 marking either? Dang that is in the last inside row of the safe and it will be a real job to get it out of there! Very nice rifle. Mine is serial 440XX not that far away from yours. I still get an emense kick out of the fact those beautiful colors are as a result of a botched blue job!!!! I love the way that looks! Bill

Time I may have it is the space and where to pile the ones that come out to get the right one. I have broken two stocks in 25 years or so and I remember each and every one was from emptying a safe to find something! Bill

Miller, I am curious about your source that all "B" barrels were post-war production?

Mine and it's a tack driver..s/n 38761.
I purchased this 20 years ago and was just lucky to find a B barrel by my own dumb luck. 1 of 10,000 wow!
It has an AV 1 stamp as well.

I grabbed four along the way mostly by chance. One unissued M39, one issued M39, and two M1891's . The B is the only thing that sets them apart from any other rifle of their type from Sako, or VKT, or Tikka.

A "B" m39 is next on my wish list... That and a better cardboard box to sleep in when I spend all of my money on Finnish mosin nagants. They are pretty though. Very nice example, I like the stock color.
