Re: Question about this Type 53 Mosin I just got off.

The stocks I've seen like that have always been attributed to the VC in "jungle workshops". Not sure how accurate that is but similar stocks have been posted on French MAS36 and other confirmed Vietnam bringbacks. I'll looks for pics of other t53s like this one. I have them saved somewhere...

Re: Question about this Type 53 Mosin I just got off.

Stock looks exactly like those I've seen on a few other Vietnam bringbacks. Nice carbine!

Re: Ex Dragoon 1925 why arsenal stock mod?

There's a very good possibility that the only thing original to your rifle is the barrel and receiver.

Re: Ex Dragoon 1925 why arsenal stock mod?

The little groove you mention was dropped in wartime to speed production IIRC. I've seen a few stocks without the thumb grooves chewed up or cracked there where it looked like someone took a screwdriver or bayonet tip to pry between the little shoulder of the stock and the band to get the band to sl...

Re: Ex Dragoon 1925 why arsenal stock mod?

Going out on a limb and guessing that there's a repair at the end of the barrel channel on each side between the band spring and end cap? Only because of how common that repair is. Since your mosin is an ex-dragoon it's a virtual certainty that numbers aren't original matching, but matched during up...

Re: Marlin 39-a

I had one of these as a kid. It had a straight grip though and not the semi-pistol grip stock like all the others I've seen. IIRC it was a Golden Edition also. I wish I had it now.

Nice 22. Enjoy!

There was a directive but I don't recall the date. 1945 seems right though. I'll look for the source of the info

Re: Please, help with my new rifle

They restarted the serial numbers each year until 1938 when they went to a different procedure. So the first rifle assembled and numbered in, say 1928 would have been serial number 1. And up from there til the end of the run for that year then started over again at #1. Your barrel was made in 1921, ...

The only thing that bugs me about the balloon incident is why wasn't it shot down in the Pacific instead of the Atlantic? Did it get past our radar?
It wasn't picked up until it was already over Alaska apparently.

Re: Kossack marks.

The Izhevsk bow and arrow varies a bit over the years. It's size doesn't really have any direct connection to the Cossack mark or exact model of rifle.

Re: 1945 Izhevsk M38 Verification

Best bet is to check the tang date. A lot of 43 dated mosins, m38s included, have poorly struck dates that make the numbers resemble 1945 instead. In45 dated mosins tend to have very nicely struck dates in my observation.

Chassepot 1866-74 M80 M14...that's a mouthful

I'd been wanting one of these for a while and even though this one had issues it was at a price I couldn't turn down. A bit of history. Originally this rifle was a Chassepot needle-fire 11mm using paper cartridges and made somewhere between 1866 and 1873. The receiver isn't dated but retains the ear...

P-28 Finn series rifle spotted.

Maybe this was already posted and I just don't see it. Anyways, second documented P-28 marked P series and the creater of the video didn't even know it was a unicorn. You never know where something rare might turn up.

Re: Sanitized 1891/59 Carbine

That rarity scale hasn't been accurate for a while, it hasn't been updated in a decade at least. That being said, 91/59s aren't that common. I don't think the "sanitized" ones were done on purpose honestly. All I've seen were on 43 dates receivers, since some of those had faint markings an...

There are lots after 1936 but they are recycled older receivers rebuilt into new rifles. No brand new hex receivers after '36 that I've ever seen.

Re: M38 Carbine Finn Captured

There is a cartouche on the stock. How do you compare to "barrel"? Darryl Check and see if the stock cartouche initials match the inspector's initials here. Generally an original stock would have matching initials with the barrel but not always. In any event, the stock can be fairly accur...

Re: Berdan 2 shotgun conversion

This thing is pretty light. They had lots of these that would have been scrapped otherwise and I assume s single shot for the citizenry was more appealing to the authorities than any sort of repeater. And cost. Cheap to make. A lot of mosins were converted in similar fashion also

Berdan 2 shotgun conversion

These never seem to turn up in the US and lucky me had one pop up 5 minutes away. This one was converted at a state-owned arsenal, so is it still a bubba? Berdan 2 converted to 16 ga in the 20s or 30s, a good link with info is here http://maksimov.su/oruzie-i-boepripasi/gladkostvolnoe-oruzie/gladkos...
